"Security experts are issuing a warning for travelers to think twice about using airport charging stations.

They say using the public USB ports could put unsuspecting users at risk of what's called "juice jacking."

It happens when hackers secretly modify the USB ports to install malware on your phone or steal your data."

    Well, it is finally happened.

I said for years in my posts that can be found long now archived if even stored any longer, that one day they would learn to hack the electric current that powers our operating systems.

Guess the portable handsets were the perfect opportunity to do just that.

    Incredible tech risks

Well, it's not really that they're hacking the electricity.

It's just that the electricity is supplied through a data port.

You would be safe with a USB extension cable with no data wires.

Is there a way to tell if the cable has data wires or not?

Not without looking inside. But that's ~destructive.

You can buy USB "data blockers". But really, just buy a short USB extension cable. Carefully slit the outer insulation and shielding, near one end. Then tease out the white and green data wires, cut ~5 mm gaps, and use short lengths of heat-shrink tubing to insulate the ends. The red and black wires carry the power. Finish by repairing the shielding and insulation.
