I don't understand what motivates this group. They claim part of it is because they can, part is for fun, and part of it is supposedly to expose weaknesses in security, particularly on popular online gaming networks, but I'm not certain of that. In addition to the Xmas attack, they have attacked several gaming networks in the past few months with Denial of Service Attacks, including a prior Sony attack and an attack on Blizzard Entertainment.

Disappointing thousands of kids on Xmas is a stinker of a stunt.

I suspect that this is part of the war between TorGate folk (Pando fans plus GamerGate partisans) and the Tor Project.

It seems that they're DDoSing the entire Tor network, which has made it pretty much unusable. I also see that they're attempting a classic Sybil attack on Tor. The Tor Project is of course fending off the Sybils, and I suspect that some Tor activists are counterattacking.

I'm also having problems with some of my standard VPN services. And so I'm guessing that some privacy-centric VPS firms, which host both Tor relays and VPN servers, are caught up in the war, in that they're used by both sides, and under heavy loads.

Let's hope that this calms down soon.

Edit: Well, I've just gotten up to date re tor-talk, and it's pretty clear that this mess is just about the TorGate war on the Tor Project.

Edit: It seems that riseup.net is down :( Maybe that's because Riseup hosts Tor relays, or maybe it's because LizardSquad has an email account there. But it is for sure cramping my style!

Edit: According to Thomas White on tor-talk:

I was following all of that live on Twitter for hours yesterday and I was amazed at how fast Anonymous banded together and had their sights set on Lizard Squad to defend Tor. It was certainly interesting to see it from the beginning. Although surely it may take a few days or so until we see some confirmed results out of this.

I am most gobsmacked by this. Do these kids want to spend quality jail time? Do they consider it as something like grad school? Are they just mouthbreathers?

Sometimes young people get it all wrong. Getting attention at any cost ... the price that they will have to pay is not what they expected. I can only assume that Anonymous will crush them and they will never understand why. Losers.

Some of these points have been highlighted already but it's more news.
XBox and PSN attacks were “marketing scheme” for Lizard Squad’s DDoS service
