What just happened? Google has responded to a leak of its new smart speaker by officially unveiling the device. The company says this is a look at “what the Nest team is working on from home.” It appears to have the same mesh fabric as the Google Nest Mini, and it sports hidden LED lights. Sadly, Google never revealed any technical details.

Last year saw Google reveal its second-generation Google Home Mini, which was rebranded under the Nest banner and now called the Nest Mini. The firm did the same thing with the latest version of the Google Home Hub, renamed as the Nest Hub Max.

Yesterday, a Japanese regulatory authority leaked the new Nest device, and an FCC listing revealed its model number.
With the cat out of the bag, Google decided to give its upcoming Nest speaker an official unveiling, including a decent photo and a short video of it being used.

Android Police: This is Google's upcoming Nest speaker, the successor to the original Google Home

It's probable Google was planning to announce this new Nest-branded speaker at last month's canceled I/O conference, but plans will have likely changed due to recent global events. With it out in the open and going through regulators now, it probably won't be long until we get official word on it.

Update: August 5, 2020 (7:17AM ET): More details of what could be a new Google Home device have spilled on Twitter. According to journalist Roland Quandt, a product codenamed “J2” will launch at the end of August with a price of around €100 (~$118).

There’s a new Google Home launching soon codenamed “J2” and it’s supposedly going to cost about 100 Euros. Available from the end of August, retail says.

We’re not sure if this is the “Prince” device spotted in June, but the suggested price slots it between the Nest Mini series and Google Home Max. Quandt adds that the product will be available in Charcoal and Chalk, as per most Google smart devices.

Google's upcoming smart speaker could be called "Nest Audio"

A teardown of the Google Home 2.28 app by 9to5Google points to the company calling its upcoming smart speaker the "Nest Audio." Google initially branded its smart speakers under the Google Home moniker before switching to the Nest branding and unveiling the Nest Mini at its Made by Google hardware event last year.

The company had already given an official look at its upcoming smart speaker back in July, though it did not reveal any of its key specs or features. A small teaser video shared by Google also hinted at the Nest speaker being portable enough to move around in one's house but it is unclear if it will come with any built-in battery or not.

As per leaks, the Nest Audio speaker is expected to cost around $120 which would make it an ideal replacement for the now-discontinued Google Home speaker that was released in 2016.
With this branding change, it is clear that Google is moving all its smart home products under the Nest branding.

Google's first Assistant speaker, Google Home, turns four this year. The company says that device was designed primarily as a means to access the Google Assistant, and music playback was secondary. But the de facto second generation, the new Nest Audio, was purpose-built as a media device — and boy, does it ever show. [...]
Should you buy it?
Hard yes. At $99, the Nest Audio is a bargain, especially when you remember that the Google Home launched at $129 back in 2016.
It does everything you've come to expect of the Google Assistant just as well as Google Home — better, even, thanks to improved on-device processing that speeds up certain commands like music controls.
