YouTube is reportedly working on a TikTok rival called Shorts to be introduced by the end of 2020. The new feature will be part of the YouTube app, according to The Information, which cited two unnamed sources Wednesday, and it would allow users to create and upload their own short videos.

The Shorts feature will reportedly make use of all the music that Google-owned YouTube has licensed already, with songs to "be available to use as soundtracks for the videos created by users," according to The Information.
YouTube declined to comment on the matter.

"We don't comment on rumor or speculation," a YouTube spokesperson said in an email.

Short video content really appeals to a lot of users because it offers a short burst of entertainment without demanding any commitment. We’ve seen the proof in terms of the unprecedented growth of services like Snapchat, Instagram, and especially TikTok. This growth seems to have compelled bigger content platforms like YouTube to experiment with newer content forms such as 15-second long Stories introduced in November 2018.

Much more recently, YouTube was also found experimenting with a TikTok-like feature called “Shorts” for relatively longer videos. And just a few days later, Shorts already seems to be rolling out to certain users.
For all of these users, the Shorts show up differently inside the YouTube app. This suggests YouTube may be testing the feature is a small set of users. Shorts appear under Watch History or video suggestions under the currently played videos – either separately or alongside Stories.

Apparently YT Short refers to videos uploaded by users with a very short duration (like fragments of a song). That YT Short is shown in my play history.)

For now, there’s only limited information about Shorts but we’ll update you when we learn more. There is also a minor probability that the previously reported Shorts feature may be different from the short videos we see in the screenshots above.

I think it's a bit weird that I'm getting to see more and more people posting TikTok video's on Instagram. But can't you do the same with Instagram Stories? I wonder what's so great about TikTok.

YouTube appears to have taken an aim at TikTok as the Google-owned platform has now started testing a way to record multi-segment videos that run up to a maximum length of 15 seconds.

YouTube announced its intention to give the 15-second video format a try this week, which may be called Shorts.
The experiments have started on mobile — both Android and iOS — with a small group of people.

“We’re testing out a new way for creators to easily record multiple clips directly in the YouTube mobile app and upload as one video. If you’re in this experiment, you’ll see an option to ‘create a video’ in the mobile upload flow,” informed YouTube.

It was reported back in April that YouTube was working on its own TikTok rival called Shorts. Five months later, YouTube has finally announced its new "short-form video experience for creators and artists" who solely want to shoot content through their smartphone.

YouTube will be rolling out an early beta of Shorts with a bunch of creator tools for testing purposes in India. The company notes in its announcement that this is still an "early version of the product" but it is being released now so that it can take the necessary feedback and further improve it.

To encourage creators to upload videos to Shorts, YouTube has also moved the create '+' icon to the bottom tab in Android. This change has also been made live in India for now, though YouTube will now expand it to iOS and other countries as well.

YouTube is looking to give its TikTok rival, Shorts, a competitive advantage. The company confirmed it’s expanding a recent global test that defaults the YouTube mobile app to open directly in Shorts if the user had previously watched Shorts videos before exiting. In other words, instead of being taken to the YouTube homepage when you return to the app, you’d be dropped into the short-form video experience.

The company said the test, announced publicly last week, has been running on iOS only for a small percentage of global users. YouTube now says it’s preparing to expand the experiment to Android, as well.

The test will only target users who are engaging with YouTube’s answer to TikTok, known as Shorts. First launched over a year ago, initially in India, YouTube Shorts arrived in the U.S. this March and has since expanded to other global markets over the course of 2021.

According to a YouTube spokesperson, the company is looking to understand with the new test whether or not users find it helpful to start off from where they left off the last time they closed the app.
But the test also signals how YouTube sees TikTok, and the broader shift to short-form videos, as a potential threat to its business.

YouTube Shorts, the company's short-form video TikTok competitor, has proven to be a big success for the platform.

But YouTube is still synonymous with its longer content and its well known long-form content creators. To help remedy this, the platform is releasing a brand-new tool to help YouTubers pull 60-second clips from their existing long-form videos and quickly create content for YouTube Shorts.

"We want to empower creators to easily take a moment from one of their VODs [videos-on-demand], bring it into our tools and easily edit it into an engaging Short for their viewers," said YouTube Shorts creation product lead Vadim Lavrusik in a statement provided to Mashable.

This new feature, announced by YouTube in a post on Thursday, will start rolling out today and should reach all mobile users in the next few weeks. The tool is only available within the YouTube app on iOS and Android devices.

"To use this feature, all creators need to do is to navigate to their channel and choose a video that they’d like to Edit into a Short," explained Lavrusik.
In addition to expediting the process of clipping longer videos, creators will also be able to add additional content to the Short if the clip is shorter than the 60-second maximum length to make a YouTube Short video.

YouTube begins watermarking shared Shorts videos

YouTube wants everyone to know if you're simply cross-posting your Shorts to TikTok or Instagram Reels. In an update on its community help center, a Team YouTube member has announced that the website has started adding watermarks to Shorts downloaded from its Studio portal for creators. YouTube will start by watermarking Shorts you create on desktop over the coming weeks before expanding to mobile over the next months.

The Google-owned website said that it's watermarking Shorts so "viewers can see that the content [the user is] sharing across platforms can be found on YouTube Shorts." It sounds like it's hoping that the new feature could raise awareness that it hosts short-form videos, as well, and get you to try it and use it over its competitors.

By June this year, YouTube said Shorts already has 1.5 billion active, signed-in monthly users, which is a lot more than the 1 billion monthly active users TikTok said it reached back in September 2021.

YouTube today is addressing one of creators’ chief complaints with filming videos for its TikTok competitor, YouTube Shorts: to date, the music and sounds added to videos could only be 15 seconds in length, even though Shorts themselves can be as long as 60 seconds. Now, thanks to revised licensing deals, YouTube says the majority of music on Shorts will be available in durations of up to 60 seconds. In addition, creators can “remix,” or sample, up to 60 seconds of sounds from other videos, instead of only 15 seconds, as before.

Over the next few weeks, YouTube creators will begin to see the expanded options for adding music to their videos when using the audio picker in the YouTube app for iOS and Android. In some cases, the songs will only be 30 seconds in length, due to continued licensing restrictions, YouTube notes. The company, like TikTok and others, negotiates with songs’ rights holders, including the music label or distributor and publisher, before including the track in YouTube Shorts.

While YouTube won’t comment on the state of its deals with its music industry partners, it says that most songs in its audio library will now have a maximum duration of up to 60 seconds.

The long-form video giant is testing shopping features with US-based creators and audiences in the US, India, Brazil, Canada, and Australia, allowing influencers to tag their own products in Shorts that viewers can then purchase, according to the report. An affiliate marketing program, open to select US influencers, adds yet another way for creators to monetize their Shorts, with YouTube, the creator, and the merchant all taking a cut of sales, according to the Financial Times.

The addition of Shorts shopping features comes just days after TikTok announced similar features.

All social media companies are in a race to win the short video war and Google is showing some progress against TikTok and Instagram. The search giant said during its latest earnings call that YouTube Shorts has crossed 50 billion daily views. The company previously reported 30 billion daily views as part of its Q1 2022 earnings.

While the growth performance is impressive, the number of views on Shorts lags on Instagram and Facebook. Last October, Meta said that Reels garnered 140 billion daily views across both social networks.
Just like other platforms, YouTube has been pushing users to view Shorts. In November, the company rolled out Shorts on TV.

Last year, YouTube said that 1.5 billion logged-in users watch Shorts every month. In 2021, TikTok said it has crossed the mark of 1 billion monthly active users. In comparison, Instagram has more than 2 billion users. The company has not revealed how many of those watch Reels — though it is hard to escape short videos if you log into Instagram.
