Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Mozilla Foundation announced a joint effort to improve browser interoperability to ensure Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox provide the same reliable and consistent web experience.

A post on web.dev details how the four companies, alongside other contributors, will work on a new interoperability benchmark for modern browsers called Interop 2022. The ultimate goal is to reduce “pain points” for developers and help them focus on building their web experiences instead of working around various inconsistencies in browsers.

Interop 2022 is a benchmark that focuses on 15 different areas of modern browsers. Those areas often cause headaches for web developers due to platform differences. Google, Microsoft, Apple, Mozilla, Bocoup, and Igalia agreed to ensure browsers behave the same in those areas.

Developers and users can track how Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox progress in the 15 areas on the Interop 2022 dashboard. The page shows scores for stable and experimental versions of each browser (Chrome and Edge Dev, Firefox Nightly, and Safari Tech Preview) and explains how the benchmark calculates scores.

What is Interop 2022? #
Interop 2022 is a benchmark, agreed on by representatives of three major browser implementations, and developed through a process of public nomination and review with input from supporters Apple, Bocoup, Google, Igalia, Microsoft, and Mozilla.

The benchmark focuses on 15 areas, identified by developers as being particularly troublesome when they are missing or have compatibility issues across browsers. All browser vendors have agreed to focus on these areas, and everyone involved is excited to get started on making the experience of developing for the web measurably better.

I guess this is a good thing. Websites should work correctly in any browser. It reminds of the days of IE, Netscape and Opera, sometimes sites would work only in IE because of M$ being complete jerks. Actually, even Firefox sometimes had problems if I recall correctly.
