Google gave Maps on mobile a big revamp earlier this year. Like all other first-party apps, the design is always being tweaked and Google Maps for Android now features a pill-shaped search field.

The search field at the top of Google Maps for Android has long been a rectangle with rounded corners. With February’s bottom bar-focused revamp, the hamburger menu for the navigation drawer was removed.
Google Maps now has a pill-shaped search bar that features the four-color pin icon at the left. There’s a “Search here” hint and a gray microphone icon, while your rounded profile avatar fits rights in at the edge.

The rounded Google Maps search field first rolled out to iOS. It’s appeared on and off for Android users in recent weeks, but is seeing a wider rollout on the stable and beta channels this evening.

Google announced today a new layer in Maps that provides critical information about COVID-19 cases in a given area. The goal of the new feature is to help users understand the COVID-19 situation before going to a certain place.

Starting this week, Maps users will be able to see color coding for areas with new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people on a seven-day average. There's also a label that indicates whether the number of cases is increasing or declining.

Google Maps Live View uses augmented reality to overlay arrows, directions, and now landmarks over the real world to make navigating easier. The feature is getting a number of big updates today.

Outside of walking directions, Live View today lets you see how far away and in what direction a location is. Google will now overlay nearby landmarks to let you “quickly and easily orient yourself and understand your surroundings.”

Live View will show you how far away certain landmarks are from you and what direction you need to go to get there. These landmarks can include iconic places, like the Empire State Building in New York and the Pantheon in Rome, and easily recognizable places, like local parks and tourist attractions.

Meanwhile, the Live View button will be appearing in more places throughout Google Maps. In addition to directions and opening a direct listing, the AR button will appear when navigating by transit. Google says this is “particularly useful when you exit a transit station and don’t know which way to go.”

Lastly today, Google touts improvements to the global localization technology that powers Live View in Maps. Pins dropped into the real world will now take into account elevation.

Google has announced a handful of improvements coming to Google Maps including updates to its COVID overlay, takeout ordering features, and real-time crowdedness information for public transport. Alongside them, the company says the Google Assistant driving mode, which gives you access to features like voice controls for music while you’re driving, is launching in preview in the US.

The Google Assistant driving mode was first announced back at Google I/O 2019 and was spotted rolling out on some Android devices last month. The mode offers voice controls for features like phone calls and media playback from inside the Maps navigation screen, so you can access them while keeping your eyes on the road.

As usual, Google wants to be at the center of getting people where they're going, and in a new blog post Google says it will start loading Search and Maps with information on vaccination sites. "In the coming weeks," the company writes,

"COVID-19 vaccination locations will be available in Google Search and Maps, starting with Arizona, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, with more states and countries to come."
Soon you'll be able to search "COVID vaccine" and get location results showing access requirements, appointment information, and if a site has a drive-through. Google says it is partnering with the Boston Children's Hospital's VaccineFinder.org, government agencies, and retail pharmacies for the data.

Google has introduced a few Maps features that could help you ease back into the world, now that COVID-19 vaccines are available. One of the most useful changes to Maps is the expansion of transit crowdedness predictions to over 10,000 cities in 100 countries.

If you're in New York and Sydney, you can even see a train's level of crowdedness down to transit car level in real time. Maps will mark the least crowded cars, so you can line up for one of them, thanks to data from transport agencies in the areas. It's still a pilot at the moment, but Google says the feature will be available in more cities soon.
In addition, the tech giant has launched a new Timeline Insights tab for the Maps app. So long as you're on Android and you have Location History switched on, you'll be able to view "monthly trends about how you’re navigating the world."

Google constantly tweaks its Maps program to make it more useful for users (and, admittedly, all the businesses that pay to advertise in the app and on the web).
According to a message sent to members of the Google Maps preview program, the next major feature to be added will be automatic display of prices for tolls on roads, bridges, and other potentially expensive additions to your navigation route.

At the moment Google Maps identifies the presence of toll roads, both in the general map and in navigation routes (see above).
Hopefully it'll show up soon, as it could be a huge boon to anyone who has to drive irregular routes or who's trying to get around a new city inexpensively.

Google Maps users on Android and iOS today are seeing a new prompt that explicitly permits the app to crowdsource their “navigation data.” Notably, live turn-by-turn navigation will not work unless you agree.

This dialog box provides a high-level overview of how “How navigation data makes Maps better” and appears after you tap “Start” on the directions page.

As you navigate, Google collects details, such as GPS location and the route you took. This data may be used to make information, including real-time traffic conditions and disruptions, visible to others and help them find the fastest route.
The company is now explicitly laying out what powers that last capability to end users and requiring them to agree to crowdsourcing to use it.

The tool shows the coverage of trees in urban areas to show how these areas are affected by heat and poor air quality. Google wants officials in these citiies to use the data to plant trees in the right areas, and says that LA, Chicago, Austin, Louisville, and Miami are currently using the data.

Cities around the world have told us that it can be difficult to set concrete climate action goals when they don’t have access to reliable, trusted information. The company is rolling out updates to Google Maps for Android and iOS that introduce aerial views of close to 100 famous landmarks, including Alcatraz in San Francisco, Big Ben in London and the Empire State Building in New York City. The feature melds AI with billions of images (including satellite and Street View shots) to create realistic 3D views. Google pitches this as a preview tool for tourists, but it's also a handy way to satisfy your curiosity without booking a flight.

There's also a pair of more conventional but very practical upgrades. Google is upgrading Maps' cycling navigation with more detailed routing info, including heavy car traffic, stairs, steep hills and road types (such as a major thoroughfare versus a side street). Google is rolling out a handful of new Maps features for the summer, but the highlight is a significant update to location sharing that lets you receive arrival and departure notifications.

Google Maps is adding location-sharing notifications that can alert you when somebody has arrived or left a place. Once this feature is live, open their page in the app to start the set-up process. The alerts are for “every time” a person arrives/leaves, so it’s continuous.

Say you’re headed to a concert with a group of friends. If they’ve already chosen to share their location with you, you can set a notification for the concert venue’s address so you can see when they’ve arrived and meet up quickly. You could also set a notification to see when they’ve left the venue — just in case you get split up.
On the privacy front, Google said “notifications can only be set for someone who has already chosen to share their location with you.” Those that share their location will receive multiple reminders that it’s active and that somebody has an arrival/departure notification set:

Google launches Street View in India after years of rejection

Google has relaunched Street View, the Google Maps feature that allows users to explore an area through 360-degree panoramic street-level images, in India more than a decade after it first rolled out the service in the South Asian market and roughly six years after the feature was banned in the country over security concerns.

This is the first time that, Google executives said at a press briefing in New Delhi Wednesday, Google has partnered with third-party firms for Street View. Unveiled 15 years ago, Street View is live in over 100 countries and territories and has amassed over 220 billion Street View images, the company said earlier this year.

“Starting today, Street View will be available on Google Maps with fresh imagery intensity in India that is covering 150,000 kilometers (93,205 miles) of roads that’s actually been ingested into Google Maps,” said Miriam Karthika Daniel, VP – Maps Experiences at Google, at the event. “So I’m really thrilled about how people will start using Street View and in India and see how we have suddenly changed everyday lives.”
India rejected Google’s plans to collect images for its Street View service in 2016 over security concerns of sensitive defence installations.

Google is discontinuing its standalone Street View app.

The app will be pulled from app stores in the next few weeks, while support will end on March 31, 2023, the company tells The Verge(Opens in a new window). Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

I'm looking for a replacement for Google Maps. I hate it that the red pin will disappear once you zoom in and that there is no ability to always display maps in 3D mode. And satellite pics are often outdated, it might show you info from 5 years ago. They truly dropped the ball when it comes to Google Maps on desktops.

Google is bringing a new augmented reality Live View feature to its Maps app, allowing smartphone users to visually search for restaurants, coffee shops, and other businesses that are located nearby.

Using Live View, you can open up Maps and tap the camera icon in the search bar to see what's around you, from shops and banks to ATMs and bars. Most notably, the company announced that Immersive View is rolling out starting today in London, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Tokyo. Immersive View, which Google first announced at I/O in May 2022, is designed to help you plan ahead and get a deeper understanding of a city before you visit it. The company plans to launch Immersive View in more cities, including Amsterdam, Dublin, Florence and Venice in the coming months.

The feature fuses billions of Street View and aerial images to create a digital model of the world. It also layers information on top of the digital model, such as details about the weather, traffic and how busy a location may be. For instance, say you’re planning to visit the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and want to get an idea of it before you go. You can use Immersive View to virtually soar over the building to get a better idea of what it looks like and where the entrances are located.

“To create these true-to-life scenes, we use neural radiance fields (NeRF), an advanced AI technique, transforms ordinary pictures into 3D representations,” Google explained in a blog post. “With NeRF, we can accurately recreate the full context of a place including its lighting, the texture of materials and what’s in the background. All of this allows you to see if a bar’s moody lighting is the right vibe for a date night or if the views at a cafe make it the ideal spot for lunch with friends.”

The company also announced that a new feature called “glanceable directions” is rolling out globally on Android and iOS in the coming months.

The feature lets you track your journey right from your route overview or lock screen. Users will see updated ETAs and where to make your next turn. If you decide to take another path, the app will update your trip automatically.
