Google has been testing a monthly subscription service for apps and games, under the name Google Play Pass.
The move to a subscription model has been rumoured since before Apple introduced its 'Apple Arcade' offering earlier in the year.

The package looks almost ready to launch, with $4.99 (£4.12) set as the monthly fee - not a lot considering it gives access to 'thousands' of apps, all without adverts and In-App Purchasing (IAP).
Although gaming is at the heart of the offer, there'll be more conventional apps too. The listing, found by Android Police, says it offers:

"Explore a curated catalogue spanning puzzle games to premium music apps and everything in between. From action hits to puzzles and fitness trackers, with Google Play Pass you unlock access to hundreds of premium apps and games without ads, download fees or in-app purchases."
With access to all these games for such a low monthly fee, this could see the average time per user spent on gaming creep up, and perhaps even lead to an uptake in sales of games not included in the package.

Google is getting ready to throw the doors open on Play Pass, a mysterious offering that could be subscription service for Android apps and games found in its Play Store. The first hints about the service surfaced last year, but things seem to be picking up steam with the rival Apple Arcade looming.

"It's almost time," the web giant tweeted Monday. "Google Play Pass is coming soon." The tweet include a GIF that resembles an admission or raffle ticket.
The tweet comes roughly a month after Android Police reported that Google was already testing the service, which would come with a $5 monthly fee. Stardew Valley and Marvel Pinball are reportedly among the games included in the subscription.

Android folk have their version of Apple Arcade and Xbox Game Pass: It’s Google Play Pass, and it will offer access to more than 350 apps and games for $5 a month. It’ll debut this week in the U.S., Google says, and it’ll roll out to other nations “soon.”
Google shared the details today.

Free-to-play games larded with in-app transactions dominate mobile, and paid games — especially those from indie devs and studios — have had difficulty carving out a viable niche. Apple Arcade and Google Play Pass gives such games a way to stand out and make money in this brutal market.
Developers and studios will make money based on downloads and engagement with an app or game. If someone plays, say, Terraria on a near-daily basis for a year, that engagement matters for the money that the studio would bring in.

Play Pass works with Android devices, including Nvidia Shield. You can’t subscribe on a Shield — you’d need an Android smartphone or tablet to do so — but you can download games that are part of the subscription — they show up with zero cost in the Play store.

People have been wondering about the full roster of launch titles featured in Google Play Pass — supposedly, we've got over 350 of them to go through. Here's the thing: Google doesn't make it easy to suss out all of the apps participating in the program, whether through the Play Store or external documentation on associated Google sites. Great. Well, guess what? We're gonna give it a try and list as many apps on Play Pass as possible.

In any case, we've sorted through all the initial titles listed in each app and game category showcased in the Play Pass tab of the Play Store and were able to find 251 of the "over 350" apps available. Some apps, such as Tasker, aren't listed in the tab, but do have the Play Pass icon attached to their listings, so we're still on a "be on the lookout" mission for those remaining apps as with new apps coming into the program.

Google is extending the free trial for those who sign up for Play Pass on Google Play, the $5/month service that grants ad-free, in-app purchase free apps and games on the company’s Android app marketplace.

Typically, Google’s free trial is 14 days, but until May 14, the company is offering 30 days for free. That ain’t bad.
To sign up, you should see a banner inside your Google Play app, but if you don’t, you can swipe out the side menu and access Play Pass there. If you’re a G Suite user, don’t bother, your account isn’t supported.
