YouTube might be planning on improving its podcast experience

Although Google already has a dedicated app for podcasts, the company is reportedly planning on improving the podcast experience on YouTube. The company has posted an opening for an executive who would oversee its podcasting business.

Although many users already use YouTube to listen to podcasts, it isn’t one of the platform’s core offerings. However, Google allegedly wants to change that. According to a YouTube spokesperson (via Bloomberg), the company is currently on the lookout for an executive to “be in charge of organizing and managing the millions of podcasts that already exist on the site.” This news comes just a few weeks after YouTube launched its first-ever official podcast called “The Upload: The Rise of the Creator Economy.”

Since Google already offers a dedicated app for podcasts, though, it isn’t clear to what extent it wants to improve YouTube’s podcast experience. However, we won’t be surprised if Google eventually kills off Google Podcasts and integrates all of its features into YouTube.

YouTube kicks off its podcast push with an Explore page
The section is very modest, but hints at greater ambitions.

YouTube's interest in podcasts appears to extend beyond paying creators to make videos. 9to5Google notes YouTube has quietly launched a podcast Explore page. Only some people can access it on desktop or mobile, but those that can will see popular channels, episodes and playlists as well as categories and recommended shows. At present, you'll see standard video thumbnails and playback controls, even if you're a YouTube Premium subscriber who normally sees listening-oriented options.

We've asked YouTube for comment. The Explore page appears to have gone live near the end of July, but is only now becoming more widely available. It's not clear what (if anything) will happen to Google Podcasts.

While YouTube's longer-term plans aren't evident, the new area suggests the Google brand is positioning itself as an alternative to major podcast clients like Apple Podcasts and Spotify. That wouldn't be surprising if so.

NPR's podcast catalog comes to YouTube

Google is partnering with National Public Radio to bring the broadcaster’s podcasts to YouTube. On Thursday, the two announced that more than 20 NPR shows, including Up First and Throughline, are now available on the platform. NPR is no stranger to YouTube. Its Tiny Desks concert series has been a hit on the platform for a few years now, with a recent Ludovico Einaudi performance amassing nearly 900,000 views and counting.

The addition of NPR podcasts comes just as YouTube recently added an Explore page dedicated to the format.
