Maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised. Somehow, I doubt it though.

Err? How would that work with Thunderbird and other independent email clients retrieving by IMAP/POP3 protocols?

Big Sigh ... Maybe all that BS is gmail to gmail? I also use Thunderbird for most of my email and I do not see how that stuff could be enforced?

Well lets see how it goes over. It better be faster loading anyway. Geez, they have the power to make it load zippity split but all these years it's been a mediocre slow crawl at best. Got used to that.

I am going to purposely refuse to use these new Gmail-only features. I am going to request standard email when someone send me. If someone would be not bothered I am going to ignore email or just extract mail from Google servers (there is always a way - not trust that "confidentiality mode") and send as an attachment. Email was and should be an open protocol. Not some Snapshat-ish Google proprietary crap.

Try the new Gmail interface right now
Gmail users may activate the new Gmail interface redesign and functionality improvements right now by enabling the new interface on the Gmail website.

What I like and don't like about the new Gmail interface
Google started the rollout of the new Gmail interface yesterday. While the company stated that users would be able to try it out as early as yesterday, it appears that the new interface is on a staged rollout which means that some users may not have access to it yet.

Just as Register said in aforementioned "Google to add extra Gmail security … by building a walled garden" it is about Google's control over email protocol. This protocol was and should be open. Sending emails should be view as meeting on neutral ground, but if you use new Gmail features it isn't anymore.

I'm not impressed with the new look, but it could have been worse. The problem is that you now have to allow google.com in order for it to work, I always block this because I like the "old school" Google search engine view.

    Same here.
The more they try to change up, the more boring and unworkable or at the very least terribly inconvenient it becomes.
