Austin apartment dwellers will soon get another option for high-speed internet. Google Fiber announced that it is rolling out Webpass to the Texas city, making it the eighth metro area to offer the service.
The point-to-point wireless offering is aimed at high-occupancy residential and commercial buildings, and works by transmitting gigabit internet via rooftop antennas. Austin, which has had access to Google Fiber since 2014, will be the first city to host both high-speed internet options.

Google's expansion of its main fiber internet service has been slow and riddled with setbacks. In a big restructuring in 2017, the company announced it would focus on its wireless service due to the high costs of running fiber optic cables. Back in February, the gigabit internet provider pulled Fiber out of Louisville after infrastructure challenges led to service issues.

The Google Fiber network in Austin is growing at a slower pace than residents and officials expected, according to Austin Business Journal. The service is only available at 28 city-owned buildings.

Google Fiber announced today that it will be dropping its TV package option to focus solely on providing high-speed internet service. It will still provide the service to existing customers who pay for it, but the company says “customers today just don’t need traditional TV” anymore when so many options are available online through over-the-top TV services and streaming platforms.

“As of today, Google Fiber will no longer offer a linear TV product to new customers. For our current TV customers, we know you have come to rely on Google Fiber TV and we will continue to provide you with traditional TV service,” the company said in a blog post.
So it makes sense that, in 2020, Google Fiber doesn’t quite need a TV service that it pays a fortune for, especially as it’s still working to make its internet service an attractive option for consumers and a financially sound one for its parent company.

Google's wireless gigabit internet is now called Fiber Webpass

Google Webpass is now known as Google Fiber Webpass in all the cities where the wireless gigabit internet service is available. The tech giant first used the Fiber Webpass name when it deployed both its Fiber and Webpass internet connection services in Austin, Texas last year.

Just a few days ago, it also launched both options in Nashville, Tennessee. However, the new name is just a rebranding at this point -- it doesn't necessarily mean that Fiber is expanding to all Webpass cities in the near future.
Webpass is a service under Google Fiber that provides point-to-point wireless internet for high-occupancy buildings like offices and apartments.

"Rolling out our new name and branding is another step in bringing together the best parts of both Google Fiber and Webpass -- building on our shared mission of connecting more people to reliable, customer-friendly, high-speed Internet," Bell also wrote in his post.

Google Fiber announces first new market in 4 years with public-private partnership

A decade ago, Google set out to disrupt traditional ISPs by building and operating its own fiber network. That grand vision did not pan out, but Google Fiber today announced its first new city in four years with West Des Moines.

West Des Moines, Iowa in 2016 set out to make sure local residents have “access to fast and affordable internet.” It’s achieving this through a public-private partnership where the city is responsible for laying down the fiber.
Google Fiber will be the “first tenant” of that network and city-wide internet provider.

The West Des Moines City Council today officially approved a measure to build this “open conduit network.” The gigabit service will cost $70 per month when it goes live. There’s still a “ways to go” before the network and service launches, but residents can sign-up for updates today.

In recent years, Alphabet’s Access division has moved to drop Fiber’s 100 Mbps plan and traditional TV to streamline offerings. Google Fiber today announced that it will start testing 2 gigabit plans next month.

This doubling is said to be for “customers in internet-intensive households who may need more than a gig to do their thing, whatever that may be.” It will cost $100 per month compared to the existing $70/month for 1 gigabit.
Subscribers will be provided with an unspecified “Wi-Fi 6 router and mesh extender.

Google Fiber networks are designed so there’s plenty of capacity to allow our customers, with the right in-home hardware, to reach 2 Gig (and even faster) speeds. Our approach to network design allows us to keep our customers connected to the fastest speeds available.
This offering will be available form next month in Nashville, Tennessee and Huntsville, Alabama. Following the preview period, it will be available for all customers in those two cities “later this year.

The kind of person to subscribe to Google's ultra-fast Fiber Internet probably knows a little more about good Wi-Fi than most, so it's nice that Google Fiber is now letting its savviest subscribers make the most of their gigabit (and upcoming 2Gbps) speeds without the Network Box.

Previously, Fiber did allow users to bring their own routers, but only with the use of Google Fiber's Network Box router. This new, updated bring-your-own-router feature is completely optional, but ideal for those who want to have the fastest and strongest Wi-Fi network possible in their home.
Unfortunately, this announcement doesn't bring with it any newly supported regions, so the vast majority of us still can't take advantage of Google's excellent ISP.

Back in February, Google stopped offering new customers the option to add conventional TV service to their internet package. It made up for the change in policy by letting people subscribe to YouTube TV and fuboTV. In August, it bolstered that lineup with Philo, and now it’s also adding Sling TV as one of its preferred streaming partners.

Sling TV subscriptions start at $30 per month. Depending on the package you pick, you can get a mix of channels that includes the likes of CNN, AMC and TNT. It’s a good option if you want some sports channels, but can’t justify a subscription to fuboTV.

New and existing Google Fiber customers in Nashville and Huntsville can choose either 1-gigabit-per-second service for $70 a month, or 2Gbps service for $100 a month. The latter is designed for "power users, the latest devices, and advanced smart homes that use lots of internet," Google said. The 2Gbps service comes with the Google Fiber Multi-Gig Router, which uses Wi-Fi 6.

Google Fiber is available in 11 cities/regions across the country and has spent the last few years modernizing its service. The legacy Google Fiber TV offering is now officially set to be retired in favor of streaming.

Alphabet’s ISP thinks “traditional TV is expensive and outdated.” Google Fiber originally offered a conventional “Fiber TV Box” with DVR and plans starting at $105/month. The migration away from that legacy plan to a free Chromecast with Google TV and paid streaming service, like YouTube TV, FuboTV, Philo, or Sling, started earlier this year.

That “Fiber TV Upgrade,” which includes replacing the Network Box router with Google Wifi, became available to all cities in June. As of today, customers in Nashville, Huntsville, Salt Lake City, and Provo are fully off of Fiber TV.
With this change, Google Fiber gets to streamline its offering and focus on delivering faster internet service. For example, new customers today can only choose from 1 Gig or 2 Gig services. That said, it still offers a Google Voice-powered Fiber Phone for $10 per month.

After a long hiatus, Google Fiber will expand to new states

It has been over a decade since Google Fiber first launched, and the rollout has been, well, slow. The last time Google rolled out its service to more areas was in 2015, nearly seven years ago. Now, it looks like a reinvigorated Google Fiber will be rolling out to new areas, with the company promising expansion to Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Nebraska, and Nevada.

However, while many had assumed the worse, it looks like things will be okay for the time being. Although there are now plans in place to move forward, Jain did not comment on the service’s financial status, instead stating, “the intent is to build businesses that will be successful in and of their own right, and that is what we are trying to do at Google Fiber for sure.” Furthermore, Jain said that the company could not keep dipping into its parent company Alphabet’s “wallet”.
