Google has snapped up Goldman Sachs cybersecurity veteran Phil Venables

Venables, a cybersecurity leader with a storied career in the financial services sector, will be Google Cloud’s first Chief Information Security Officer (CISO).

According to published reports, Venables will manage Google Cloud’s internal risk in addition to responsibles for securing cloud migrations and customer defenses.

The Venables hire comes on the heels of Google’s pick up of Jeanette Manfra, a former assistant director for cybersecurity at the Department of Homeland Security, who was heading up a new “Office of the CISO” at Google Cloud.

WSJ: Google Hires Goldman Sachs Veteran to Lead Cloud Security

As greater scrutiny falls on cloud providers and their potential systemic importance, Alphabet Inc.’s Google Cloud business has turned to Wall Street for its first security chief.

Phil Venables, a senior advisor for risk and cybersecurity at Goldman Sachs Group Inc., will join Google Cloud on Monday as its chief information security officer.

At Google, Mr. Venables said his role would be different from a traditional security chief in that he will focus on cloud migrations and customer defenses in addition to internal security. Cloud providers have wide knowledge of threats across industries, he said.

“Cloud becomes almost like a digital immune system, in that it’s detecting issues and then rapidly providing support for all of their customers to help defend themselves,” he said.
