Google Cloud said it is launching new cloud regions in Chile, Germany and Saudi Arabia as its expands its global footprint.

For hyperscale cloud providers, adding regions is becoming critical as countries roll out data sovereignty laws that require customer data to remain in country. Google Cloud has been building out its hybrid, industry and vertical game throughout 2020.

The three new cloud regions come as Google Cloud has already expanded. In 2020, Google Cloud launched new regions in Jakarta, Indonesia, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City and Seoul. Doha, Qatar, Madrid, Milan and Paris are also on tap.
According to Google Cloud's post on the expansion, each country has its unique characteristics.

Saudi Aramco teams up with Google Cloud to offer services to customers in Saudi Arabia

A subsidiary of Saudi Aramco is teaming up with Google Cloud to offer its high-performance services to customers in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia is joining the global network of Google Cloud Platform regions as part of a strategic alliance agreement signed between Saudi Aramco Development Company and Google Cloud this month.
Google Cloud will establish and operate a new cloud region in Saudi Arabia, while a new company will be formed after required regulatory clearances to supply cloud solutions and services to customers, Aramco said.

The collaboration taps into rapidly expanding cloud services demand in Saudi Arabia, which is forecasted to reach a market opportunity up to $10 billion by 2030.

Google’s new cloud region finally lands in Melbourne
Comes four years after Google Cloud Platform originally launched in Sydney.

Google has officially launched its cloud platform region in Melbourne, almost four years after first bringing a physical region to Australia.

The new region joins a host of new regions across the world, including Doha, Qatar; Milan and Turin in Italy; Paris, France; Santiago, Chile; and Madrid, Spain.

“In 2017 we launched our first cloud region in Sydney and, since then, we have continued to invest and expand across Australia in an effort to support the digital future of businesses,” Matt Zwolenski, Google Cloud director of cloud customer engineering for Australia and New Zealand, said in a blog post.
As part of the announcement, Zwolenski claimed that the company had injected $3.2 billion in annual gross benefits to business and consumers in Australia, including $686 million to customers and $698 million to partners.

More cloud regions coming to the US and across the world

Google has announced new cloud regions coming to Columbus, Ohio and Dallas, Texas in the US, as well as new expansions across the globe to make apps run faster for local users.

Google has revealed that its new cloud region in Israel will be located near Tel Aviv, and outlined its expansion across South America, Europe, Asia, and Middle East.

Google Cloud now consists of 29 cloud regions and 88 zones — up from 25 regions and 76 zones in April 2021. It gives customers compute and storage resources that are closer to their users, as well as Google's analytics and its content distribution network (CDN).

The new Tel Aviv region will help startups scale up and adds to regions opened in: Warsaw, Poland; Delhi NCR, India; Melbourne, Australia; and Toronto, Canada.

Another milestone for Google Cloud is its next-gen cloud for Germany in a partnership with T-Systems. Google plans to spend €1bn on cloud infrastructure over 10 years in Germany, and is building the Berlin-Brandenburg data center as well as expanding its cloud region in Frankfurt in 2022.

In Saudi Arabia, Google announced Dammam as the location for its new cloud region.
Google also announced that its region in Santiago is now available that will, once again, bring the cloud closer to customers' end-users.

Google Cloud announces its first region in Mexico

Google Cloud today announced plans for its first cloud region in Mexico, its third in Latin America after Santiago, Chile and São Paulo, Brazil.

The new region, which will be Google’s 35th, will allow it to better serve its local users with lower-latency access to its cloud services, but — and these days, this may be even more important — offer these users data residency and compliance options.

“The cloud region in Mexico will unlock new possibilities for the use of cloud technologies by public sector organizations in the country,” said Juan Carlos Sarmiento Tovilla, the director general of Information Systems at Mexico’s Federal Court of Administrative Justice. “Different public entities would benefit from interoperating in an efficient and secure way, facilitating access to computing power and information technologies.”

Google Cloud announces upcoming regions in Malaysia, Thailand and New Zealand

Fresh off of an expansion to Mexico, Google today previewed the launch of new Google Cloud regions concentrated in Asia-Pacific (APAC), specifically Malaysia, Thailand and New Zealand. When they come online, they’ll bring Google’s total number of cloud regions to 34 — short of Azure’s more than 60 but ahead of AWS’ 26.

At a minimum, all Google Cloud regions offer services including Compute Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine, Cloud Storage, Persistent Disk, CloudSQL, Virtual Private Cloud, Key Management System, Cloud Identity and Secret Manager. Additional products usually come online within six months of a new region’s launch.

In a blog post, Google cites data from IDC projecting that total spending on cloud services in APAC (excluding Japan) will reach $282 billion by 2025. Other research agrees. According to a 2021 survey from Information Services Group, cloud services accounted for more than 84% of APAC’s IT and business services spending in Q3 2021 — by far the greatest percentage of any region.
