In about a months time I move (between departments) from being a full time .net developer to being a Linux/OSS Developer :)

Will be developing some national (I work in the public sector) critical systems. These are web based, so will be the common php/mysql at the front end, but also these systems are highly stressed, so will be a lot from the sys admin side, a lot of monitoring and logging and using tools like Splunk to report on these metrics and tweak/scale the systems as needed.

Quite exciting that my hobby is now my full time job !

    Cheers. Nick.

Really awesome! I did the same thing - switched from hobby to full time, and it's absolutely magical. I wish you the best of luck and lots of fun, and good money of course!

    Thanks everyone.

There is a definite move towards open source technologies (most cost issues around vendor lock in and licensing) within my employer, I am one of 2 new hires for this new team and I have also found out that there won't be a .net developer replacement for myself, but they are going to add to one of the Java teams in my current department.

    Cheers, Nick

Congrats! Sounds like a fun job! Just out of curiosity (as somone trying to get into a similar position) what kind of certificates do you have and/or reccomend getting? I have all of the CompTIA certs but they haven't helped to much yet.

Its a tough one to answer, as I have a lot of experience and a Computer Science degree. I tend not to go for certs, have self taught myself everything specific to get the job done.

Generally certs and provable relevant experience are interchangeable in the tech job market.

IMHO the best certs for looking for a job are the most common/popular industry recognised ones relevant to the type of position you are looking for.

    Cheers, Nick
