https://www.ghacks.net/2025/02/24/gmail-google-plans-to-end-sms-verification-in-favor-of-qr-codes/ People who don't use mobile phones to go online (just use them for texts and calls) may struggle with this.
Sounds like something that would open some opportunities for phishing. Send a code that isn't human readable. Not a fan of QR codes for that reason.
About time, if only FB would take notice. I made sure not to allow SMS notification in all important accounts, though MS still urges me to enable it.
I am not a fan of QR codes either. Like any other thing on the internet they can, and will, be crafted and manipulated (known as quishing) https://www.wilderssecurity.com/thr...lation-for-malicious-c2-communication.455665/ https://www.cloudflare.com/en-gb/learning/security/what-is-quishing/ https://www.wilderssecurity.com/thr...and-payment-scams-prompts-ftc-warning.453090/
Gmail, removal of SMS 2FA option, and the QR code nonsense It's the end of the Web as we know it, and I feel not fine. Here's an article discussing the recently announcement plan by Google to remove SMS as 2FA option for Gmail and replace it with a QR-code-based system, covering media hype, risks of SMS solutions like SIM swaps, greed and man-in-the-middle attacks and social engineering, benefits of SMS solutions like simplicity, reliability and no data usage, numerous problems with QR codes as a security method, potential ostracization of poor and old people without smartphones, possible privacy implications, and more. Take a look. https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/gmail-sms-qr-code.html Cheers, Mrk
Thank you! FanJ, the answer is: you're not valuable enough to be assimilated into the Borg, it seems. Mrk
