A hot potato: After reports from customers and hardware reviewers that two models of Gigabyte's desktop PC power supplies were failing, damaging other PC components, and even exploding, Gigabyte is making some adjustments however those may only fix one of the PSUs' reported issues. Gigabyte is also offering a return and exchange program.

If you have a GP-P850GM or GP-P750GM PSU, according to the appendix at the bottom of Gigabyte's statement, they're allowing returns and exchanges for serial numbers SN20343G031011 to SN20513G022635 for the P850GM, and serial numbers SN20243G001301 to SN20453G025430 for the P750GM.

Hardware reviewer Gamers Nexus tested several of these PSUs and 50 percent of the P850GMs and P750GMs failed in an "explosive capacity."
YouTube channel Hardware Busters also reported an exploding P750GM. Similar reports have come from customers leaving reviews on stores like Newegg.

Gigabyte's statement released last week acknowledged these issues, primarily the failure of the Over Power Protection (OPP) system which is meant to shut down the PSU if the wattage exceeds the limit it was designed for.

"We were made aware by third parties of concerns regarding potential issues of the GP-P850GM and GP-P750GM tripping at high wattages when tested via DC Electronic Load equipment for extended lengths of time repeatedly close to the 120% to 150% OPP trigger point," the statement reads. "This level of extended testing could severely reduce the lifespan of the product and components."

Gigabyte has now set a new limit of 110 percent to 120 percent of the advertised wattage. That's 950W to 1050W for the P850GM, and 825W to 925W for the P750GM.

This alone however doesn't address all the issues reviewers and customers pointed out.

Gigabyte apparently refuses to replace potentially "explosive" PSU

A few days earlier, Gigabyte released an official statement regarding its potentially "explosive" and hazardous power supply unit (PSU) models, namely the GP-P850GM and GP-P750GM. In that press release, Gigabyte, among other things, laid out a range of serial numbers (S/N) to indicate the units that would be eligible for the company's Return and Exchange service.

But the response from Gigabyte contains a different explanation altogether stating (translation) that:

This press release is applicable only to the newer batches.
And there was no mention of batches of any sort in the company's original response.

PSU expert, Dr. Aris Mpitziopoulos, who first noted this problem last year has also taken issue with Gigabyte's response. Denoting such unfavorable reviews from people like Aris (via TechPowerUp), Gigabyte stated that it "takes reports of this manner extremely seriously".

However, when Dr. Aris reported about his failed review unit to Gigabyte last year, the company allegedly responded that "its engineers tested five units and found no problems." It also didn't ask for the "bad sample back for failure analysis, which is the typical procedure" and also "didn’t offer a second sample to continue the review" (via Tom's Hardware).

Why spend money to fix it when you can refuse? If ABIT had refused to repair their motherboards with bad capacitors they'd still be in business like the companies that did refuse. I believe it is alleged that Gigabyte was one of those companies.

Newegg reportedly begins accepting returns for Gigabyte's "explosive" PSUs

Technology retail giant Newegg has reportedly initiated the process of accepting returns for Gigabyte PSU models GP-P850GM and GP-P750GM. These two SMPS models from Gigabyte have been stated to have a rather "explosive" nature and it was found that the retailer was bundling these units in its Newegg Shuffle package alongside high-end graphics cards.

Apparently, in an email sent by Newegg, the etailer giant has asked eligible customers to respond in case their Gigabyte PSU models fall within the denoted serial numbers (S/N) that Gigabyte had mentioned earlier in its official response to the incident.
