Georgia Tech Breach Hits Up to 1.3 Million People

A forensic investigation is being conducted to determine the extent of the breach, but the organization says the names, addresses, social security numbers, dates of birth, and internal identification numbers of up to 1.3 million students and student applicants, current and former faculty, and staff may have been compromised.

Georgia Tech said the exposed data was located in a central database associated with a web application.
An analysis of the incident revealed that hackers had gained access as early as December 14, 2018, by exploiting a vulnerability in a web application. The university said the flaw was patched.

This could turn out to be one of the biggest data breaches suffered by a university in the United States.

Channel 2's Aaron Diamant has been following this story since it broke in April, when the college said someone gained unauthorized access to a web application, affecting nearly 1.3 million people, including "some current and former faculty, students, staff and student applicants."

Georgia Tech will be sending out letters offering credit monitoring and identify theft protection.
“This whole thing about credit monitoring is ... it’s just the corporate playbook 101,” Howard said. “It’s a waste of people’s time. It’s a waste of Georgia Tech’s money. Credit monitoring does nothing to protect you after one of these data breaches.”
Clark urges all consumers to freeze their credit instead.

“Any organization is subject to hacking, and it doesn’t matter how many precautions you put in place, if hackers are determined to hit your database or find a backdoor vulnerability into it, they’re coming in,” Howard said.

Mass email exposes personal data of Georgia Tech students, again

A staff member at the Georgia Institute of Technology accidentally sent an email containing personal student information to more than 1,100 students, the university announced Thursday.

The email sent this week contained an attachment that included the names, ethnicities, school ID numbers, email addresses and GPAs of an undisclosed number of students, according to a university press release. The attached file did not include Social Security information, the school said.
Georgia Tech has faced a series of similar incidents in recent memory, with a data breach affecting 1.3 million of its current and former students, faculty and staff constituting the most severe case last April.

At Georgia Tech, an announcement on how the university intends to prevent this from happening again will come in the days ahead.
