FTC Seeks to Examine the Privacy Practices of Broadband Providers

The Federal Trade Commission issued orders to seven U.S. Internet broadband providers and related entities seeking information the agency will use to examine how broadband companies collect, retain, use, and disclose information about consumers and their devices.
The orders seek information about the companies’ privacy policies, procedures, and practices. The orders were sent to: AT&T Inc., AT&T Mobility LLC, Comcast Cable Communications doing business as Xfinity, Google Fiber Inc., T-Mobile US Inc., Verizon Communications Inc., and Cellco Partnership doing business as Verizon Wireless.

Last week, U.S. senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) sent an open letter to the CEOs of the four major telecom providers urging them to limit the data they collect and store from their customers’ communications, web browsing and app usage. Wyden has demanded that telecommunication executives respond to the letter before Sept. 4 with an outline of the steps they will take to protect customer privacy.

“Your companies collectively hold deeply sensitive information about hundreds of millions of Americans,” Wyden said in his letter. “It should come as no surprise that this data is a juicy target for foreign spies. Particularly in this modern era of massive data breaches, it is critical that companies like yours minimize the data you keep.”
Wyden said that current rules that are in place that surround data retention are not enough, and that the telecom companies have been able to skirt them.

Wyden for his part urged the companies to cut their data retention period back further, to a few weeks or even a few days: “Retention periods of several years should not be the norm,” he said.

Huh. This is basically the same argument why VPN services shouldn't keep logs. Except for the "foreign spies" aspect. Unless you consider prosecutors etc to be "foreign spies"

The Federal Trade Commission has revised the list of companies from which it is seeking information as part of its examination of broadband companies’ privacy practices.

To ensure it receives the most relevant and accurate information, the FTC has withdrawn the orders to AT&T Inc., and Verizon Communications Inc., and is instead sending orders to: AT&T’s advertising subsidiary, Appnexus Inc.; Verizon Online LLC, Verizon’s wireline advertising subsidiary; and another Verizon advertising subsidiary, Oath Americas Inc. The FTC is also sending a new request to Charter Communications Inc., which is the nation’s second largest cable provider.
