"Fry’s Electronics going out of business, shutting down all stores

Former king of build-your-own-PC retailers couldn't survive COVID, consignment shift.

Fry's Electronics, the decades-old superstore chain with locations in nine American states, appears to have gone defunct. Bay Area TV station KRON-4 was the first press outlet to confirm the news late Tuesday, saying that Fry's will shut down all 30 of its American locations. The retailer will reportedly make an announcement at some time on Wednesday via the Fry's website..."

When I lived in "the big city," hardly a week or two passed without swinging by Fry's Electronics (and when the store was Tandy's Incredible Universe).

Having moved a while ago, whenever I rolled in from the boonies, I visited the store. Many times we made the trip with the purpose to buy a big-ticket/big-something wanting to avoid the potential problems that arise sometimes with shipping such items. Otherwise, if I could order it online at Fry's I could stick it to The Amazon, though it's been several months since I needed to place an order.

It had been almost two years since the last time and I stopped in early last month to oooh-aaah me some tech and stock up on canned duster which they've always sold at rock bottom prices.

I was perplexed that on a weekday in mid-morning there were about a dozen cars in the parking lot. Then as soon as I passed the doorway... The store was practically empty. Large spans of barren floor space. Rows and rows of empty shelves. Others sparsely stocked. A single cashier. So, today's announcement comes as no surprise.

    But they had canned duster.

For posterity, in hindsight, I should have picked up some Fry's branded AA alkalines. I just archived yesterday's, and final, Fry's Deal of the Day email.

Fry's Electronics is dead. Long live Fry's Electronics.
