"France fines Google nearly $57 million for first major violation of Europe’s tough new data-privacy rules

France’s top data-privacy agency said Google failed to fully disclose to users how their data is collected and what happens to it. The watchdog agency known as CNIL said Google also failed to obtain users’ consent properly for the purpose of showing them personalized ads. Both run afoul of the General Data Protection Regulation that Europe implemented in 2018."

So isn't that a GDPR violation? You can't make tracking a prerequisite for use, right?

I think GDPR allows for that. In the country I come from there is popular news site offering email accounts operated by company that is part of Bauer Media Group that demands that.
