Microsoft is changing the way these programs access Hotmail e-mail which will require you to take action.

To continue to receive e-mail from your Hotmail account, please select one of the alternative solutions below before September 1, 2009. After this day, new e-mail can only be delivered to your mail programs through the following alternative solutions.

If you use Microsoft Office Outlook to view Hotmail, you can download free Office Outlook Connector

to continue accessing your Windows Live Hotmail within Outlook 2003 or 2007. If you're using Outlook 2002, you will need to change the settings on your program to access your Hotmail.

If you use Outlook Express to view Hotmail, you can choose to download free Windows Live Mail (recommended)

If you use Entourage to view Hotmail, you can change the settings in your program to view your e-mail.

Why is this happening? Outlook, Outlook Express, and Entourage use a legacy communications method (known as the DAV protocol) to access Hotmail. Because the DAV protocol is not optimally suited for programs to access large inboxes such as Hotmail which now provides users ever-growing storage*, new alternatives have been built. Last year, customers asked us to postpone plans to retire the DAV protocol until more options were available. Now that these options (including the POP3 protocol) are available, we are ready to retire the DAV protocol.

Thanks Nick for the info! :) Any clue if this will affect using Gmail to retrieve Hotmail? I started using Gmail to do this earlier this year and it's working great. I would hate to lose it...

That site comes as untrusted, I guess by Avira. Not sure why, but if you are sure I will open it anyway.

I don't have any idea how to switch to POP 3 access to hotmail.

    Hi HKEY1952,

I changed browsers from FF to IE, and it worked without warnings. I have now got my OE to work, and I greatly appreciate the help.

I am finding FF does not work well with Yahoo, and did not work with the link. I think I am about ready to use IE as my default browser. I will have to get used to it, as I have used FF for years.

Many thanks to all. I sure did hate to have to go to each account individually.

    Regards,
    Jerry

Before you start using Microsoft Internet Explorer as your Default Web Browser make sure that the Web Browser is fully patched including an fully patched Operating System.
Perform an manual Windows Update and choose all of the Critical Updates.....also check the Optional Updates and include the Root Certificates Updates and anything else you may want.
Should you decide or choose to implement Microsoft Internet Explorer 8, first fully update your current Microsoft Web Browser version, then upgrade to version 8.

Welcome to the Real Web Browser!

Thanks, I have been using IE8 for awhile. I also keep Windows updated. I may not use it as my default, but just for Yahoo, and the few sites that FF does not work. Not sure why I cannot send mail from FF, but I can't. I have read of others with similar problems.

Thanks, again, and have a good evening.

    Regards,
    Jerry

The problem was FF. I have had various problems with FF including it not working well with Yahoo mail.

Anyway, I finally went POP3 with Hotmail, and now it works. I preferred the former, but could not get the MS method to keep the old method to work.

    Regards,
    Jerry
