When you used the net for your first time, did you:

Did you feel the urge to click on anything that said "Free! Click here NOW!"

Complain that your downloads were too slow and click on the download accelerator link, which coincidentally appeared when your downloads were slow?

Accept a link through messenger that said "Check out my cool pic" labelled as a .exe file

Find Bonzi Buddy cool and "cute"?

Seriously infect the pc with severe viruses then complain to mom that the pc is crap and to get a new one?

Thought that Kazaa was the greatest invention ever made?

Ignore the "Your pc is infected with 30 keyloggers, please do something about it" and say "That's annoying, how do I get rid of it?"

(actually all of what I just wrote sounds like the mind of a 13 yr old internet user, lol)

What kind of things did you do? What mistakes did you make?

I believe I went through Prodigy to get on the 'net the first time.

Nothing moved. No popups. No nothing. :D

When I was 13, the monitor screen colours only came in orange/black or green/black....there was no internet and people thought Pong was the best thing since sliced bread!!!

That doesn't just sound like the mind of a 13 year old, it sounds like every new computer user, me too! that ever flipped on a power switch!

Yes, to the download accelerator, and the Put this on Your computer to make it go faster - plain ole accelerator - which, of course, slooooowed the puter down to a standstill!

Clicked on a cartoon once - and could not get it to turn off, go away, stop playing, ANYthing - and it was a filthy very violent bloody cartoon - actually pretty tame compared to now - 5 yrs later.

Clicked on a 'wonderful' screensaver - download here and went to the moon, mars, jupiter and uranus and back!

Thought it was natural to have my puter just shut down if more than two pages were open, didn't know there were 100's of them open I couldn't see.

Had the wonderful experience of having my puter (more than once) just not do ANYTHING - just sit there looking back at me with sad eyes - like why are you so dumb and look at all the fleas you put on me.

Watched in horror as page after page after page after page opened -clicking them closed just opened more - escape didn't help, nothing helped puter wouldn't even shut down, I think it finally had a seizure - then went into a coma, that HD is in a lead lined box under the garage, just in case "IT" gets out!

Waited anxiously for e-mail from ANYbody except the 150 or so from my new best friends who wanted to sell me a sex life, watch it, sell it to someone else for a limited time only and just generally help out in every area of my life, some I didn't even know were my areas, but I could try it for 30 days with a cc#!

I was getting so many it took most of my time just trying to delete them, they wouldn't go mass select - NO they wanted individual attention so-had to delete them each individually only to watch them re-appear seconds later, never did get any e-mail from anyone I knew - how could they even get through?

That was the first six months of my first year, took my two more to find out what it was, stayed away from chat rooms after a few awful and disastrous 'click on this - it's cool! etc. Finally found safe haven -'WILDERS'', from here found out there ARE LOTS OF 'GOOD GUYS'!'

Thanks, Trbot, I think! :D for the chance to remember all this with a sense of renewed security and humor that I did not feel at the time!

Thanks to ANYone who has ANY thing to do with computer security for the millions of people who depend and enjoy their computers!

Once she gets going it's hard to stop her, ain't it!!!! I know!

My very first time on the WWW ....not bulletin boards....I was at work in the early 90's....and saw a link to a Public TV program called "This Ole House". My buddy had an AOL access floppy....went home and loaded it. I then clicked away freely for a better part of a few months when I started searching for a faster way to surf on dial-up. I came across a site called DSLreports....stumbled onto the Security Forum....and it ain't been nothin but an addiction to safe surfing ever sense. What an up hill battle it's been

You're right, but the number of 13 yr olds overpower the rest of the first timers in age difference;)

when I look back it frightens me a little

The sad thing is.....I used to have a Microbee pc.

32k was so cool back then.........ahh reminiss the days of Lemonade Stand....

Can't really add anything much here.....when I was thirteen we had only just got 'Steam driven Radio' and we tuned in the programmes by passing an electric current across our next door neighbours Tom cats back-side.....that is until my Dad realised that using a 'Cats Whisker' meant something else entirely......but that's science for you......trial and error..trial and error...

    Cochise,
