I think OS X+ uses the Novel kernel.
OS 9 uses Apple designed kernel.
The iPad runs the iPhone OS.

    iPad Runs The iPhone OS

The short answer...Yes. The iPad OS is Unix based.
Second...Since the iPhone was jailbroken and the iPad uses the iPhone OS, just a matter of time for who does it first. Fastest fingers wins.

OS X is not only UNIX based, but it is officially certified as UNIX by the Open Group (the people who own the UNIX name). Linux and BSD are not certified UNIX (mainly because they ain't paying the Open Group anything to do it).

Possibly, but it depends on the app being exploited. This iPad exploit appears to be a privilege escalation bug that someone found in Safari. This allows the attacker to "break out" of the limited user account and obtain root access. Such things do happen on Linux, but I have never seen an example of someone getting root by exploiting, say, Firefox. However, depending on the nature of the bug, it might be possible to escalate privileges to root by exploiting a non-root service. That's what happened here.
