This may be a weird request but is there any simple firewall with a blinking icon to indicate network activity? I would prefer a non hips firewall, the constant prompts are just too annoying.

Comodo Firewall with HIPS and Sandbox disabled, traffic animation switched on.

Windows 10 Firewall Control shows a tiny ballon in tray, can be opt-in or opt-out

there is a free, basic and pro
(free can only "allow" or "block" / 2 zones and windows folder is granted with no limits)
i prefer the pro but its not free.

    windows app available

not sure, if WFC4 has such option, please ask here

if you only need activity without further informations get a free network monitor.

I've used Windows firewall with GlassWire for that, but decided it wasn't really worth it outside of noticeably metered networks.

*Oh wait, blinking tray icon... So not overall data traffic. I always used Process Explorer or Process Hacker running as admin to do that. You can make a scheduled task to avoid UAC prompts.
