Code in the Windows Filtering Platform has been rewritten since XPsp2, although the Vista Firewall is not much different from that Firewall except the ability to block outgoing traffic. Still, in countless articles it is recommended to replace with a third party firewall and even Microsoft would have you use OneCare.
Vista configuration is easy enough. You just select either the inbound or outbound rules container and click the new rule link, Windows launches a wizard that walks you through the creation of the firewall rule.
Third party firewalls are much more feature rich. Some may have Intrusion Detection, Web contents such as Ad blocking or alerts for ActiveX and Java.
