A member at BleepingComputer forum sent me a PM requesting information about a FireWall (FW) that runs on Windows XP. I haven't used XP in a very long time, so I can't answer his question.

As I recall, XP had a built-in FW but it only filtered incoming. The BleepingComputer fellow wants a FW that also filters outgoing.

Does anyone know of a good FW for XP?

Give Jetico free firewall a look-see.

I'm still using Outpost on win xp, but not sure if it can still be installed.
I installed it before Agnitum sold to Yandex.

Back in the days when I used XP on actual hardware, I used Comodo Firewall.
Just tried version 10.2.0.6526 (from the Wayback Machine) in a VM snapshot of XP and it worked.
You have to be careful not to let it install all the extra bloat...

I went to this thread on the MSFN forum where other versions are mentioned, but they didn't work here.

I still have a copy of the very old version 2.4.18.184 without all the bloat. :)

THANKS for all of the help!!! I passed all the suggestions on to the guy at BleepingComputer. Thanks to @zapjb I was also able to give him a download link to Private FW, my #1 favorite in days of yore.

Firewalls for XP are not capable to handle current methods of attacks, because they are same old. and ofc have own issues.

Very true. The BleepingComputer guy knows that about XP but he is a die-hard XP user. He just wants to get a handle on connect-outs & ports. He only goes online to shop at Amazon and read the Wall Street Journal.

    @ViVek -- Thanks!!!

I totally forgot about SpyShelter FW. I just checked & you are correct -- The current version of SpyShelter FW STILL supports all Windows versions, including XP (to be specific, the SS FW supports XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, all flavors of 10, & 11)!!!

If it'll still install this sounds perfect for Sygate.

I think today there is no other firewall that is...even in free version...still supporting XP. On my XP from years still is doing good job Kerio Free 2.1.5 that's very light but no way not to mention about Look'n'Stop and based on its engine PCTools FW. Of course there is also the last free version of Online Armor which can be still installed - it's from TallEmu not from Emsisoft what means that verification while installation is useless.

The "no other" wording in your comment fails to specify the "other." I *assume* you are agreeing that: (a) SpyShelter FW is a contemporary FW and (b) SpyShelter DOES support XP.

I really see no serious reason to still run XP.
So ist this whole thread just for entertainment purpose?
I'm asking in a friends name...

Yes...SS still suports XP. That's the point.
BTW - I've used "no other" in this meaning

Well, it's not true, as long as this firewall also has a HIPS component, it should be able to tackle even more advanced malware, even on Win XP. The problem with ZoneAlarm and SpyShelter is that they don't have an autoblock function (like TinyWall), but it's not a problem if you don't install software that often.
