Yesterday's Technology supplement in The Guardian had a brief item about Finjan SecureBrowsing, which was described as "A free browser plug-in that scans the code of web pages before you visit them, and rates them for safety."

Anyway, I downloaded the Firefox version and it seems to work. However, there was one very odd result. I was googling for a book review and came across one in The Age. SecureBrowsing marked the site as "Use caution: The category of this site is potentially unwanted." A bit of further googling showed that all sites linked to The Age were similarly rated.

"So what?", you may say. However, The Age is one of Australia's oldest and best known newspapers. Can anyone explain why it has incurred this rating?

We have this browser extension on some of the office machines, it is behaviour based and doesn't rely on a database update.
Mm, I wonder what code is making it flag that site.

edit: ah I re-read, 'category of this site is potentially unwanted'
select more info for the reason from SurfControl.

The plug-in looks interesting, anyone else used it?

Yes, it seems interesting. Does it use LSP hooks?

Very good. I will take a look at it :)
Do you have any comments about it (i.e. performance, accuracy, etc)?
    Thanks.

Yes very good, some search results may take the odd second extra to show up because of the analysis. It is similar to SiteAdvisor in look and speed. If you compare the two obviously you can have different results. A result for finjan may be ok for browsing but SA may caution spammy because of the different approach, (finjan extension has category rating also though, SurfControl.) The finjan extension also rates ad links in pages. All round finjan to me is the more appealing but I don't use it as I would be repeating the analysis because of finjan antidotes at the gateway.
