Fedora 33 is officially here!

Today, I’m excited to share the results of the hard work of thousands of contributors to the Fedora Project: our latest release, Fedora 33, is here! This is a big release with a lot of change, but I believe all that work will also make it a comfortable one, fulfilling our goal of bringing you the latest stable, powerful, and robust free and open source software in many easy to use offerings.

Fedora 33 launches with updated GNOME and BTRFS

The Fedora Project has released Fedora 33 today bringing new software such as GNOME 3.38. A notable change on the Fedora Workstation is that BTRFS is now the default filesystem. BTRFS has been on the radar for Linux users for years but it’s only now considered stable enough for Fedora.

With BTRFS, Fedora 33 users will gain a copy-on-write filesystem that has advanced features [...] When compared to the EXT4 filesystem, BTRFS supports bigger volume sizes, bigger file sizes, a larger number of files, and longer filenames.
Fedora 33 comes with Python 3.9, Ruby on Rails 6.0, and Perl 5.32. The nano text editor has also been set as the default but this can be changed if a user has another preference.

If you’re not a big fan of the GNOME desktop, you can check out the Fedora Spins which have also been updated but come with different desktop environments that you may prefer instead. Finally, there’s Fedora Labs which offers Fedora spins for specific tasks such as astronomy, neuroscience, graphics design, gaming, music production, teaching Python, digital security, robotics, and science in general.

Fedora 33 reaches end-of-life meaning no more security patches will be delivered

The Fedora Project has announced that Fedora 33, which came out a little over a year ago, has now reached end-of-life (EOL) status and will no longer receive updates, including important security patches. It is, therefore, imperative that you upgrade your system to a newer version of Fedora to stay safe.

For those unaware, Fedora releases are supported for just one month after the second subsequent upgrade is released. So, Fedora 35 arrived at the start of the month and a month has passed so Fedora 33 has been retired. The lifecycle of a release is quite short but the one month after the second upgrade model works well for Fedora which sometimes encounters delayed releases.
