“Far out”: Apple confirms iPhone-focused launch event on September 7, 2022

New iPhones and Apple Watches reportedly on tap, while iPads and Macs will wait.

Apple has officially confirmed the date and time for this year's iPhone-centric product launch event: September 7 at 10 am PDT (1 pm EST).

This is the same date that was leaked in a Bloomberg report last week, though members of the media are being invited to the Steve Jobs Theater on Apple's campus to cover the event and go hands-on with devices in person (the report suggested it would be entirely livestreamed, as many of Apple's pandemic-era product reveals have been). Apple's invitation was characteristically cryptic, but it's safe to assume that the company plans to announce an updated iPhone lineup and a release date for iOS 16.

The Bloomberg report said that Apple would be discontinuing the "mini" iPhone size for the iPhone 14 lineup, and it would be launching a less-expensive 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max for people who want a large screen but don't want to step all the way up to the Pro iPhones.

Bloomberg also reported that we'll see updated Apple Watches at the event, including a new version of the budget-minded SE model and a larger and more "rugged" model with better battery life and more fitness features.

This being a September event, you can bet on one thing above all others: new iPhone models. Apple is expected to roll out the entire iPhone 14 lineup, including the Pro models. Rumor has it that the company will drop the mini size in favor of a new Plus or Max size for the regular iPhone 14 but that it won't have many major changes otherwise.

The iPhone 14 Pro, on the other hand, might get a dramatically improved camera, and it may drop the top-of-screen notch in favor of a cutout for the front-facing camera and sensors.

Apple will also probably talk about its new Apple Watch models, though we know less about those beyond rumors of a new, extra-durable model for sports users—and an update to AirPods Pro is also possible, along with launch dates for the next major releases of watchOS and iOS.

As usual, Apple's September event was packed with new hardware, most of which we aren't too shocked to see. The rumor mill correctly predicted the all-new Apple Watch Ultra, as well as the more iterative Apple Watch Series 8 and a new Apple Watch SE. And the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro mostly met expectations, as well — including the sad fact that the iPhone mini is no more. The AirPods Pro have also gotten a long-awaited update, though we'd classify this as another iterative change.

Apple has wrapped up its September iPhone event dubbed "Far Out" and in 2022, the company seemed more intent on pushing the Apple Watch beyond its limits than bringing new features to this year's iPhone.
New Apple Watches
Apple introduced three new variants of its flagship smartwatch that includes the relatively affordable Watch SE 2, the mainstream Apple Watch Series 8 and the new ruggedized Apple Watch Ultra.
Air Pods Pro 2
Apple updated its Air Pods Pro with a new slimmer case and improved active noise-cancellation (ANC). The APP2 comes with a new H2 processor that will support True Depth cameras that will look into people's ears and help set up personalized audio profiles.

The Phones
Apple made a clear divide in its iPhone lineup this year separating the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus from the more software and camera robust 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max.

Apple's Pro models go on sale September 9, 2022, starting at $999 and the Pro Max will sell for $1,099 starting September 16, 2022.
