I ran ad-aware first (it corrected approx 140 issues), then Symantec antivirus (which found nothing) then... since problems still occurred I dl'd spybot and ran it too. it found 40-some more problems, but there are still unwanted toolbars and a pop-up "search bar" from allaboutsearching.com that is unwanted. I installed the google toolbar for ie and it blocks the pop-up "search bar" ...and I can also deslect the option to show somehting called "Flap Iso" (a cruddy searck/links toolbar that originated from the same allaboutsearching.com site) BUT I WANT TO GET RID OF THIS JUNK, not just hide it. Please help if you can. Thanx,

    Sibal

I finally disabled spybot's immunization feature so I could dl the uninstall software for malicious software/toolbars from allaboutsearching.com and it seems like it worked... but it doesn't feel like it. Everything is gone (not popping up on ie anymore, but the compy still randomly shuts down in the middle of stuff for seemingly no reason at all. When windows recovers it blames 1 unknown driver and 1 nvidia graphics driver... which doesn't seem right, but I'm currently re-installing anyway... here's another hijackthis log:
    PLEASE HELP :'(

Ok... I followed your instructions Pieter, but I have the sense something is still wrong on this system. Also the Ad-aware plug-in VX2 Cleaner found nothing, and the symptoms don't match exactly so there is something else causing problems. Last time I ran Spybot SD the computer suddenly and abrutply restarted without warning in the middle of the scan. When I ran Adaware (with the option to search within archives checked) a few minutes ago it crashed the system (freeze of ad-aware window with inability to close the program or execute any other programs whatsoever, even Ctrl-Alt-Delete refused to pop up a new window! ... but the mouse still moved around at least)

OK: so here's a screen capture of the error message that comes up when after windows has restarted
    https://www.slashtmp.iu.edu/public/download.php?FILE=andyhart/45839QsxaWI

and here is a screen capture of all my processes running:
    https://www.slashtmp.iu.edu/public/download.php?FILE=andyhart/694728EOb30

and here's the latest Hijak This Log:

***note that the system again spontaniously restarted between my posting of the last screen capture an my running Hijak This so there are more processes running***

Also, if anyone could suggest other forces at work (besides malware) that could be behind these sporadic shutdowns... ghouls ...goblins ...power supplies or motherboards please let me hear your diagnosis (or even several possible hypotheses). I just can't chalk this one up myself. Ex: last time I tried to type up this message Internet Explorer suddenly experienced an unknown error and "had to be shut down..." it seems more and more programs behave oddly when I use them to type up stuff about this problem. In fact the machine now acts perfectly normal almost all the time except when I attempt to fix or talk about its "eccentricities" - Perhaps the only solution is reformatting - but until I face that fated day I must continue to copy and paste all I type about these issues into notepad at each 30 second mark, because even though I can go on for hours of regular chatting and surfing and listening to my tunes... every time that it suddenly restarts and I try to scan it to see what was wrong: IT RESTARTS AGAIN ...or the de-lousing program freezes or something! We must kill whatever demon has possessed this machine (and possibly also led to a hijack of my email account in the last few days) before it spreads its seed ANY further.
