Does anyone have any experience with either Spysweeper 5.5 w/ Antivirus, or AVG Anti-Malware (the paid version that has both AV and AS)? I notice Spysweeper isn't tesked on AV-Comparatives... Is it listed under a different name (and Spysweeper licenses it)?

I'm looking for excellent protection on a gaming box, so performance is important. I know alot of people like AVG, but I'm leery of freeware (although I'm willing to change my opinion!)

    Thanks in advance!

spysweeper with antivirus uses Sophos antivirus,

it has poor detection, but a paranoid heuristic.

if using avg AM, there is no need to add a virus/spyware program.

AVG AM is not freeware, its AVG+ewido, detection is high and false positives are low. (recommended)

Thanks CSJ. How is performance with the AM? I know AVG on its own is supposed to be good (a lot of gamers use it), and I know Ewido was an excellent AS -- How big of a footprint does it have?

    performance is excellent

    try the trial here

    Av-comparatives: 97,75%
    Av-test.org: 95.10%

Very good scores, also ... they have a good renewal price too.

    try it, and decide ;)

    hope this helped.

....AVG other test results as well:

VB100: 18 success 22 failure (Not that impressive, if you ask me)
West Coast Labs: Pass 1&2 since 21/12 2005 (Last 8 times on XP)

    Cheers

    OK, one last question then:

If I have a choice of NOD32 3.0 or AVG Anti-Malware (the AV and AS combo), which would you recommend? I have Norton Anti-Bot (behavior blocker) already purchased.

I think NOD is the better AV, but would the behavior blocker make up for AVG's lack of heuristics? Just curious.

    Thanks!

both are good, i aint allowed to give my 'vs reply.'

i do like nod32, its perfect for a laptop.

however, nod32 is too expensive, wayyy overpriced in my opinion.

I have an existing license, which is why I asked (and wasn't trying to start a "vs" post, sorry about that)!

    Thanks again!

i will just say that avg antimalware is a decent app.
avg free isnt very good but antimware paid version is decent.
spysweeper from version 5x has been way to buggy and prompted me to remove it even with a active license remaining.

    sad, but as expected lodore.

ever since the v5 series, its been terrible.

adding Sophos to it, is adding more fuel to the fire. :doubt:

Well, apparently AVG Free and Pro scores 3-4% less than AVG Anti-Malware in the on demand sample sets of AV-comparatives, which puts it in the region of ~93%, which is still an "Advanced" rating. The lack of spyware detection in the Free edition (but this detection is there in Pro) may be a cause for concern but I think AVG has come a long way in the last year :)

IBK said that AVG Free/Pro scores 3-4% lower in the AV-comparatives official forum ;)
