Did you think AMD was done with Threadripper? Well, if that’s what you thought, I have some good news. I have confirmation that the company is preparing an absolutely monstrous 64-core/128-thread Threadripper part for launch in Q4 2019. AMD’s largest HEDT processor right now is the W2990X which tops out at 32-cores. This is nothing to sneeze at and is already the highest core HEDT part around but because the world can’t get enough of these yummy cores, AMD is planning to launch a 64-core version in Q4 2019.

AMD has confirmed that it will deliver a 64-core part for its Threadripper platform next year. The CPU will feature 128-threads and 288 MB of total cache (L2+L3). The CPU is likely to cost much more than 3970X (which will be available starting from today for 1999 USD).
AMD did not share any details on clock speeds or launch schedule. Originally it was planned to be shown in January.

The Verge: AMD confirms 64-core Threadripper 3990X for 2020

Next year will see the release of AMD’s first Threadripper CPU with 64 computing cores and 128 threads, double that of the 32 cores and 64 threads found in the second-generation flagship 2990WX. AMD has yet to provide an exact release date or pricing information for the Ryzen Threadripper 3990X, but don’t expect it to come cheap; the most expensive of AMD’s first two third-generation Threadripper chips costs $1,999.

Although that means the CPU requires a hefty cooling solution, it’s interesting its TDP is the same as AMD’s existing Threadripper chips despite the doubled core count. That said, we currently don’t know anything about the upcoming CPU’s clock speeds, so there’s speculation these could be lower to maintain its thermal performance.
A 64 core CPU isn’t going to be useful for many consumers, even before considering that its presumably high price will keep it out of most people’s hands in the first place.

AMD is ready to release its first Threadripper 3990X CPU with 64 computing cores. The first chips will be available on February 7th, priced at $3,990.

This isn’t your typical Threadripper, and it’s really designed for high-end desktop computing and creative tasks. AMD is including 64 cores, 128 threads, a 2.9GHz base clock with boosts up to 4.3GHz, and 288MB total cache. The cores and threads alone are double the previous flagship 2990WX, and the Threadripper 3990X is priced accordingly.
MD has partnered up with RED, makers of high-end cameras, to test the Threadripper 3990X.

AMD’s latest 64-core Threadripper won’t be making its way into mainstream desktop PCs or even gaming rigs anytime soon, but it does open the door for the company to eventually drive the costs down of manufacturing these chips so we might see something similar hit the mainstream in the future.

Today we’re looking at the most expensive desktop CPU to ever exist, and shockingly it’s not from Intel.
With no competition from Intel in this space, AMD can get away with charging quite the premium. To be fair though, a 64-core, 128-thread processor capable of the performance we're about to show you for $4,000 isn’t as absurd as it first sounds.

What We Learned
The Threadripper 3990X is a beast, it’s completely unchallenged and redefines the HEDT space. Right now nothing comes close to offering the same level of performance, and we were relieved to find that the 3990X has no real weakness.
Overall an incredible product from AMD that is not only exciting for professionals today, but it paves the way for more affordable core-heavy desktop parts in the near future.
