Europe overturns data retention directive

    This is excellent news :)

    It clearly resolves tension with the 1995 Data Protection Directive ;) Enforcement of the 2006 Data Retention Directive had been uncertain and inconsistent. Many VPN service providers, distinguishing their services from ISPs, just asserted that it didn't apply. But that was more or less risky.

    Instead of mandating data retention in a near global fashion, they'll have to coerce ISPs individually. What needs to follow that ruling is an inspection routine to ensure that the ISPs aren't being coerced or bribed into doing it "voluntarily". I suspect many will.
