ESS4 causing Email hang when spam present

I have recently upgraded to ESS4 and use the latest version & updates.
I use Vista & windows mail & windows defender also.
I am finding my Email will download normally for days at a time and will then suddenly time out ( it seems to be usually on the second message but cannot be certain)
I have tried configuring less protection and more compatibility but finally have to disable Email protection to recieve it.
This may be happening because there is a phishing warning in one of the messages (from windows mail) The messages are in red but are genuine as far as I'm concerned.
How can I configure my system to allow Email downloads to complete without hanging or time out.

 

Which version of Microsoft Windows mail are you using?
What platform (x86 or x64)?
Did you tried to setup default settings?
Try to disable Windows mail spam filter.
How do your email client access to mail server (POP or IMAP or exchange)?
Did you tried to disable POP3, POP3S protocol checking (Windows mail should be protected by plug-in)?
