Errors In First Ever Scan

I just installed NOD32 last week and I thought I followed Blackspear's instructions to the letter, but when my PC did its first scan it went no further than 11 seconds. Obviously I didn't do something right.

This is the first time I ever used this product and it is the first time I ever had a virus scan that required such configuration. I am not complaining; I am confessing that my inexperience is showing!

My screen read: Error occured while scanning MBR sector of the 2. physical disk. Error reading sector.

I also got the message that my Path C: "is invalid" And while I was looking at the folder I accidently deleted the current path.

So...

1. I can understand the path being invalid. My question is how do I create another valid path folder and how do I create a valid path for C? What steps do I need to take? I tried adding the highlited path that Blackspear gives in order to copy and paste but I am missing something.

2. Is the first warning due to Path C being invalid or do I have another issue? What needs to be corrected and how do I go about doing this?

What happens if you just run the standard "In-depth analysis" that comes with NOD32? If that works, then it may be something as simple as a typo. Can you cut and paste a copy of the scanner log here?

By the way, what types of drives do you have installed on your computer? Hard drives, floppy drives, CD-ROMs, USB drives, etc.

 

Drives: Seagate SATA Hd 250 gig; (2) Lite-on 16X DVD burners, one floppy, and HP printer that is USB driven.

[4] File cannot be opened. It may be in use by another application or operating system.

 

If you have a unit that uses flash-memory (ie digital cameras, scanners, printers etc.) the boot error will occur.

The 'error code 4' is just NOD telling you that those files can't be scanned (they can't be infected either).
Other antivirus programs never tell you this, so think of it as a bonus. You can use it to analyze different things on your own.

To minimize the number of code 4 errors and files to look through, uncheck the 'list all files' option in the on-demand scanner.

Thanks to both of you for your help. It makes sense now. This is the first time I have ever had a such an in-depth anti-virus product that needed to be configured and I certainly appreciate the added bonus. I am so impressed with this product that I have been telling others.

As for my invalid path, would I be correct in surmising that if I go back and follow Blackspear's directions I should be able to correct my mistakes and add a new path?

I've never seen an invalid path error before, so you might wanna wait for an eset mod to answer that question or someone who actually knows about it

Update: I already had unchecked the 'list all files' option in the on-demand scanner. So I went into the extensions option and unchecked "List all Files" and that seemed to work. This should be okay?

 

Do you mean you unchecked the box that says "Scan all files"? That gives you a big, long list of extensions, right? Actually, that is not as thorough, because it totally skips checking the files that do not have those extensions.

Looking at that list of File locked [4] files, the only ones that do not appear on my computer are the SpySweeper and the Logitech Desktop Manager files. (Most likely because I do not have those applications installed on my computer. ) If I had to guess, I would say that those two programs have the files open for their own exclusive access, so NOD32 is not able to scan them.

As Brian says, virus programs would have trouble infecting these files for the same reason. One exception would be if you run a dual boot computer, and the files get infected because of a virus on your second operating system.

The rest of the files that NOD32 cannot scan, by the way, are things like the Windows swap file, the files that contain the Windows registry, a couple of files used by the background Windows Update service, etc.

As for the invalid path, it sounds like a matter of simply going back through Blackspear's settings again. If you still cannot find the problem (searching for a needle in a haystack), go to the NOD32 task scheduler, right-click your task, and choose Edit. Go through the motions until you get to the "File", "Work directory", and "Command line" fields. Cut and paste the information here, and we will look at them for you.
