Over the last few days I have experienced the error messeage "Error communicating with Kernel" during my laptop startup which results in NOD not being activated during the startup process.

I have tried to uninstall the programme but each time I get the error message "A network error occured while attempting to read from the file: C:\Windows\Installer\eav_nt32_enu.msi"

I have attempted to install two service packs as recommended on this website:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/839174
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885055

...but this has also not solved the problem.

If anybody could advise me of how I can resolve this issue I would be most grateful as I am so worried that I currently do not have any anti-virus software running on my computer. Thanks!

Thanks so much for the reply.

I have done what you suggested and I now no longer have the "Error communicating with Kernel" message. However, though Nod appears to now be up and running, when I click on "Smart Scan" or "Custom Scan" I get the message "Failed to Run a Scan".

Also, within my Windows Security Alerts/Malware Protection it says that ESET Nod 32 Antivirus 4.2 reports that it is turned off. However, when I select "Turn On Now" nothing happens.

I think this means that it's not active?

    Thanks in advance again!

    Please answer the following:
    1. Do you see a green NOD32 icon in your taskbar (lower right corner)?
    2. Does Windows Task Manager show processes egui.exe and
    ekrn.exe running?
    3. What is the version of the virus signature database?
    Thanks.

I can still see the icon (and I can access the control panel). The version is 4.2.35.0

The process egui.exe is showing in the Windows Task Manager but not ekrn.exe.

Maybe re-run the installer and choose Repair?
    Worth a shot...

I reinstalled in "repair" mode but there is still conflict with the firewall and the scan still won't run!

Try running a full scan with ESET Online Scanner, maybe there's some malware preventing the program from working properly.

I had the same problem. EXACTLY the same. I ended up installing an older version and it worked fine. I have installed ESET Smart Security 4.0.474.0 and everything works. Windows Security Centre now shows all Green. I can perform Scans.

Must be something with v4.2 and Vista.
