The current release is LTSB 1607. Gonna last two to three years. Only bugfixes and security updates. Now Microsoft says you can wait awhile before you have to upgrade.
As long as they release security updates for 10 years (for LTSB), I don't think this is a problem. I'm running 1507 release in VM with no problems.
You can run it well... forever. People are still running Windows XP years after Microsoft pulled the plug on it. I see LTSB as the successor to XP and 7. Its awesome, quiet and super-stable.
Yes, I still prefer to use supported OS. You're right, LTSB seems the best solution for people that want their OS to be just that and not everything but a kitchen sink.
