   I encrypted my tablet few month ago and didn't notice any slowdown. Only startup takes a little more time...

   If you root, you can change the pre-boot pass phrase from the 16 character limit (uses lock-screen pass, lockscreen has a limit of 16), to as many as you want with the app EncPassChanger.
