Enable LAN Notifications to other computers in Vista

    In "advanced setup"/"Tools"/"Alerts and notifications", the user is given an option to notify another computer on the network of events.

    The message is "Send notifications to LAN computers by means of the messenger service" after which the user can enter a computer name.

    The messenger service no longer exists on Windows Vista.

    How can this be fixed to allow the notification function to work?
