Employees’ cybersecurity habits worsen, survey finds

The prevalence of cybersecurity incidents and the concomitant growing concerns about any organization’s cybersecurity posture haven’t done much to discourage many employees from engaging in poor security habits, a survey has found.

In some respects, employees’ cyber-hygiene is actually getting worse, according to the 2018 Market Pulse Survey by identity governance provider SailPoint, which gathered opinions from 1,600 employees at organizations with at least 1,000 employees in Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

ObserveIT surveyed more than 1,000 U.S. employees ages 18 – 65+ who have traveled with corporate devices in the past year and found that the majority are putting connectivity and efficiency above security; using public Wi-Fi and unauthorized devices to access work email and/or files on the go.

Despite past investment in a range of conventional firewalls and signature-based security tools, an intensive scan of the network environment turned up “quite a bit” of latent malicious hosts and a broad range of unauthorised activities being conducted by employees.

"[...] our employees were potentially looking for ways to get around proxy servers and things like that,” Kraus, IT manager with US-based equipment leasing firm Alliance Funding Group (AFG), told CSO Australia.

“We found everything from open VPN clients to TOR browsers, point-to-point communications to unauthorised sites, compromised credentials, and passwords in clear text. Those are all things that we need to be aware of, because it’s inherent with those platforms that malicious behaviour can be a result of that kind of activity.”

The study by authentication key vendor Yubico and Ponemon, released to coincide with Data Protection Day, also finds two-factor authentication isn't widely used, 55 percent don't use it at work and 67 percent don't use it for their personal accounts.

More than half of respondents (51 percent) say they have experienced a phishing attack in their personal life, while 44 percent have had a phishing attack at work. However, 57 percent of those who had experienced a phishing attack say they didn't change their password behavior.

"For decades, passwords have been the primary method of authentication used to protect data and accounts from unauthorized access. However, this multi-country research illustrates the difficulties associated with proper password hygiene," says Stina Ehrensvard, CEO and founder of Yubico.
