Mealybug, the threat group behind the Emotet banking trojan, has evolved over the years from making its own custom malware to operating as a distributor for other threat groups.

It is unclear whether this is because Mealybug was finding it harder to make money exclusively from banking Trojans but researchers noted that banks increasingly using two-factor authentication has made it harder to compromise accounts by stealing credentials, according to a July 18 blog post.

Researchers also noted that the threat actors behind the trojan are evolving and refining their techniques and business models to maximized profits.

Panda Banker Trojan becomes part of Emotet threat distribution platform

According to researchers from Cylance, Panda Banker, a variant of the Zeus banking malware, is still an active threat over two years after discovery.

Cyberattackers utilizing the malware often embed the malicious code in crafted Microsoft documents, designed to deploy the payload through macros.

Panda Banker also scans the system to find any known web browsers in use. If they are discovered, the Trojan injects a plugin which intercepts user traffic.

The deployment of Panda Banker through Emotet is unsurprising and shows that the Trojan still holds an active user base.
