I've have never considered email secure and always open to passive eavesdroppers. All of my email accounts (with one exception) use some sort of point to point encryption. The pipe is secure (aside from the problem alluded to in the article). There is no way to ensure that my message will transit via secure channels to its final destination. If I want to send something I do not want passive eavesdroppers to listen in on, I will encrypt before I send it.
