I am using a fax modem to receive faxes "in my computer" instead of directly into the fax machine. The main reason is that 90% of faxes are spam and can be deleted instead of having to print them. While I do use a fax machine for outgoing faxes or if I turn off my pc for extended periods, generally my pc acts like a spam filter.

Recently one modem failed after a power surge. While I still got a spare it seems that fax modems are an endangered species and I wonder what other alternatives are out there. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

You should take a look at this:

    www.efax.com

I don't use it because my fax needs are minimal, so I can't comment on it.

I opted for internet fax receiving for exactly those reasons.
As well as freeing up a phone line.
I have used a free version of Fax Digits.
Later opted for a paid MaxEmail:
$24/yr: 100 inbound faxes/mo. (fax number is not local).
