Dropbox Inc. unveiled the biggest overhaul yet to the way users experience its software as it seeks to push further into the productivity market dominated by Microsoft Corp. and Alphabet Inc.’s Google.

Dropbox is promoting a new desktop workspace and updates to its web site and mobile app to combine different files, work software and teams of employees. Customers will be able to create, access and share Google documents, spreadsheets and slides and open Microsoft Office file [...]

The company also announced deals with other partners including Slack Technologies Inc., Zoom Technologies Inc. and Atlassian Corp. that will help Dropbox expand into popular areas of workplace functions and capture more of employees’ time as they build, share and work with software files.
While the company already has partnerships with Microsoft and Google that allow customers to use their programs, the goal ultimately is to get workers to do more in Dropbox itself.

This is a story I never had any intention of writing. Dropbox updated its file-sync application for Mac last month, and the new version contains an annoyance that I would like to eliminate.
I figured this wouldn't be difficult, let alone newsworthy: I'd contact Dropbox, explain the problem, and find out if there's any way for me to change the annoying behavior.

Instead, I learned something both frustrating and fascinating: there are numerous Dropbox support employees who apparently have never used their company's Mac application and do not understand how it works.

To summarize, the problem is this: Dropbox now opens a new file browser and an associated Dock icon every time it starts, even if you don't want it to.

Due to an error, some users were accidentally exposed to the new app for a short period of time. The issue has been resolved, though there might be a short lag for some users to see resolution. Back in June, Dropbox debuted a preview version of the “new Dropbox”. Built around a standalone app interface and focused on integrating all of your work tools (your Slack, G Suite, Zoom calls, etc) into one place, it’s a pretty dramatic overhaul from the simple shared folders that Dropbox has always been known for.

Not everyone was a fan — John Gruber, for example, pointed out that all he wants from Dropbox is what it originally promised: a basic folder that syncs really, really well.
However you feel about it, the new Dropbox will start rolling out to everyone today. Those shared folders are now “Dropbox Spaces” — a hub, effectively, built around your shared files. [...]
You’ll need the new app to do any of the aforementioned new stuff, but your Dropbox folders and files will still appear in your Finder windows as before. A representative from Dropbox tells me there’s no plans on the roadmap to change that.

Dropbox has always been about file storage, sharing and collaboration, but it wants to stretch beyond those roots and provide customers, especially those using the Dropbox Plus paid tier with a set of additional capabilities that typically would have involved using third-party products. This includes password management, an online vault and full computer backup. While it was at it, the company also introduced a couple of updates for business users too.

The company is also getting into the backup business, giving Dropbox Plus users the ability to regularly backup the entire contents of your PC or Mac and retrieve it fully should you lose your computer or experience a full out machine failure. [...]
All of these products are in Beta right now, but Dropbox says they should be available to all Dropbox Plus customers in the coming weeks.

Dropbox Plus customers pay $9.99 a month for 2 TB of storage and many other features. By adding these additional features, Dropbox is sweetening the offering and making it more attractive to fork over the monthly fee beyond pure storage space.

I was reading Nikita Prokopov’s blog this morning and came across his very visual damnation of what is wrong with Dropbox. Like me, he too had thought that “in the beginning, Dropbox was great, but in the last few years, they started to bloat up.” He visually shows that as an existing customer, you need to jump through a dozen hoops to get Dropbox going on a new machine. And if you are just signing up, add another five steps.

His sentiments reflect my feelings about Dropbox, as well. When I fell in love with Dropbox, it had not even launched. It was simple and elegant.
For nearly a decade, I stayed loyal to the service, but like Prokopov, I too felt the bloat was getting too much.

I don’t blame Dropbox going the way they have — they are less about the individual customers and more focused on teams and corporations. That’s where the money is — and when you go public, you are all about the “quarterly goals.” You don’t go public without knowing that Wall Street owns you.

Family plans rolling out
Dropbox has started to invite users to sign up for family plans, at a rate of $203.88/year. You get 2TB of cloud storage, and up to six people get their own separate accounts (with the option to create shared directories).

That's twice as expensive as the 2TB Google One plan (which can be shared with up to five other people), which costs $99.99/year. The Microsoft 365 Family subscription is also $99.99/year and comes with 1TB of storage per person (up to 6TB in total), plus access to the desktop and mobile Office applications.
Dropbox's option doesn't appear to be incredibly compelling, unless Dropbox has features you need that aren't available from the competition.

They’re now announcing when to expect new features that they have been testing in beta for a few months now, which includes dark mode, a password and vaults app, and even a stand-alone scanning app.

Dropbox will soon have a stand-alone Passwords app so you can have them all in one place and it will also autofill when signing in to websites and other apps. It will be available for free to all Plus and Professional users through the Google Play Store. It’s still in the testing phase now but will be available starting next month.
The Dropbox mobile app will get a feature called Vault where you can put sensitive and important files and lock it with a PIN.

They are also introducing new things to iOS devices now but will soon be available for Android. The Dropbox Scan, a stand-alone version of the in-app scanning feature is free in English-speaking markets but syncing to Dropbox directly is available for Basic, Plus, or Professional users [...]

Dropbox is one of the most popular ways to keep stuff in the cloud, and today the company has released a new set of features including computer backups, a PIN-protected Vault, and a password manager.

The password manager, which we spotted in testing earlier this summer, will be available to Plus and Pro members. Much like other services that help keep track of login info securely, the service uses an app that works with Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. It uses zero-knowledge encryption to ensure stored passwords are only accessible to users.
Sometimes people keep sensitive documents like passports and ID cards in the cloud, and Dropbox Vault is the company's solution to keeping these kinds of files safe. Files can be moved into the Vault and protected with a PIN for secure access.

Finally, there's a feature rolling out for all users — even us penny-pinching free-tier folks. The new computer backup capabilities will allow folders like Desktop, Downloads, and Documents to be automatically synced between the cloud and your hard drive.

Dropbox still sucks for the resources it uses. It will choke your internet connection downloading files. You can set a limit on this but it is not the default. That and just this morning I had an issue with a PC that had the hard drive filled up with Dropbox files and it was trying to download more. I realize not everyone has 500 GB of files in theirs but you'd think when they develop their software that they would account for the fact that there are not unlimited resources on any PC. Dropbox is a good idea that is poorly executed.

As often happens with initially good products, they also start to suffer from feature bloat. Yet to try Syncthing ...

Recently also started using OneDrive so need to rationalise use of these on my devices.

I've had no technical issues with OneDrive. If I had to pick something that would be it. I still don't love Microsoft having my files but there are worse choices.

I really wanted to give DropBox a try but from what I've read, it has gotten way too bloated. And seems like you can't download a standalone version of the new password manager, what a shame.

Not too long ago, Dropbox introduced a whole slew of new features to its subscribers without raising its prices: there's its own password manager, the extra secure Dropbox Vault, and the option to back up select folders outside Dropbox from your computer. The company also announced a Family plan that would let up to six people share a single 2TB account, and today, this new tier is available to everyone. It costs $16.99 a month, which is just $7 more than a one-user Dropbox Plus subscription.

The Family plan offers the same feature set that's available on the Dropbox Plus plan — every member gets access to Dropbox Passwords, Dropbox Vault, and computer backups.
There's one important thing to keep in mind — Dropbox Family is only available to children over the age of 13, so if you have younger kids, you might not be able to fully benefit from the offer.
