    Hi guys...

I have been thinking of updating and backing up my drivers. I have always done it manually in the past, but have known about Driver Genius Professional for many years, but have never bothered trying it.

Is it very useful, or am I better off doing things manually?

Have any of you guys tried Driver Genius Professional?
    Opinions?

Updating drivers will yield 0 benefit with the exception of the VGA Drivers. Always stick to the official drivers from the manufacturer of your computer which has been tested and work best with your computer.

I don't know why people think that updating drivers will magically make their computer more powerful........it won't......you may only experience issues down the line

    Hi MR.
My research told me that all drivers are official drivers. Is that not correct?
And I wasn't suggesting that updating my drivers would make it more powerful. That is ludicrous to think that. Sorry if I somehow made you think I was suggesting that.

Updating drivers shouldn't be blindly done. I used DGP years ago. I use Iobit Driver Booster Free now. Think with with discretion it's pretty good.

Driver Genius Professional is a decent program, I was once a licensed user. Personally, I prefer to use driver update software to updating drivers manually. However there are some points which should be considered:

Unless you are having problems with a driver, there is often no noticable benefit to be gained from updating it. The exception is video drivers and updated versions can offer performance increases in some cases. But, having said that, I use driver update software on all my computers, and update the drivers for all my customers too.

Sometimes a driver update provided will be incompatible and the device its controlling won't work until the previous driver is restored. This can be done from Device Manager, you usually don't need to use backups to restore drivers. Bluetooth driver updates are a good example of this.

Video driver updates found by driver update software are often not the very latest versions. However, Nvidia's GeForce Exeperience software and AMD Driver Autodetect will find the latest video drivers for Nvidia and ATI respectively. Also, Intel has just released Intel Driver Update Utility for updating Intel drivers.

So, while you may want to update drivers, it probably won't matter if you don't do so. Don't be fooled by the misleading claims publishers of some driver update software who claim that updating drivers will make your slow computer run faster, or fix a lot of crashes. In reality, updating drivers will quite possilby do neither.

If you want to update other drivers, like zapjb, I also use the free version Driver Booster and it works quite well and even silently installs the driver updates, but its database of drivers is somewhat limited (but improving). On the other hand it is probably just about the best free driver update software at the moment. Free Driver Scout is pretty good too, but I don't recommend it as unless you pay attention during the install process you will end up with unwanted extras being installed.

Another program I use is DriverToolkit, but it is not free.
