It makes no difference if the image is in file chiunks or one image to make differential. The hsh file is what is needed to make differentials.

By default DS splits the image into 1.5Gb file chunks. In the update before last this is what happened. It is generally preferred for most to image to 1 image as there is no advantage having the image in several chunks if backing up to a hard drive unless for reason such as later copying them to DVD for example. If you backup several images you end up with lots of files. As there is no option to specify a different image size in the freeware version. I made the default to 1 image. I followed up with a corrected update and mentioned at the time here is the update as was meant to be :). If using the FAT filing system then keeping the images under 2GB is essential to restore as FAT has a 2GB limit.

    Hi markymoo

Then if i understand you correctly the latest freeware DriveSnap images a single .SNA file and it was the older version that created the extra files.

I like when imaging with DriveSnapshot to have a SINGLE .sna file to restore, takes less time of course.

MY understanding then is if a customer doesn't increase the MB setting to beyond the image size in the DS Advanced Options then DS has no other choice but to add those other files in completing it's imaging correctly.

yes and putting 0 is neater instead of a higher figure for 1 image and wont split either. stands for unlimited space.

You intuitive fellow you :) Thanks for that. I never knew so i set mine at something like 9500 +MB depending on the size of it's HD.

Again another simple and not so mystical setting as simple as pie in DS.

I'm just curious, what do you guys read into the Drive Snap forums being "closed?" I've posted there and now there are no posts.

    Could this be bad news?

Perhaps there is an issue with Opera, more specifically Opera's wand. For whatever reason it does not fill in the info on the inner frame, but tries to do so in the outer frame which does not work.

Why would I want this product when I have to pay for two parts to get it.
There is a free backup program called "driveimage xml". Free makes more sense if it works. Even if it's slightly slower.
Besides I haven't been able to use drivesnap as I don't like 6 different files
for one backup. It should be just 1 file. Also I haven't been able to restore on
Vista with drivesnap. So what good is it? These are my experiences with the product.
    Just curious.

Dunno about your particular situation but i agree 100% that a full back up should be only one single image. The only reason for the others as i see it is if you had set it to do differentials which in that case would create more supporting files for their updates/differentials/

I,ve always used DS to make a single .SNA file thru it's Advaned Options settings by swelling the Mb/Gb rate higher then the image will be itself, space allowing of course, and uncheck if checked the .hsh box. Running DS this way is never failed me once and the restores have also always been picture perfect! Thanks to markymoo and his knowledge of DS i now find i only need change it to only 0 for a full .SNA image now.

It was actually mentioned in a infamous Drive Snap thread awhile back that you participated in and being a fan i thought you knew of that one  . Can't remember who mentioned it may of been nexus at the time.

As you discovered that message is the default when the forum is only viewable to registered members. It fixed now.

I am understanding the two parts you simply mean Drive Snapshot and Drive Snap. Using Drive Snap you just using one file as it runs Drive Snapshot but extends it capabilities. I thought i made it well clear in the help file that it explained the benefits. Drive Snap takes the hard work out of selecting the command line options of Drive Snapshot. It's just takes a click. This gives more power to you as it quick to select another option. Drive Snapshot provides a generic boot disk that you have to configure to your own end. You can spend a few hours learning the commands and setting this up and spend more delay if you want to change the configuration later on or you can use Drive Snap that does it for you with simple clicks. Drive Snap provides automatic recovery tailor made for all your images. I am providing a very easy recovery solution for Drive Snapshot that is from CD, USB and Hard Drive. It makes it convenient and fast. Users love the speed and reliability of Drive Snapshot but would like a recovery solution for it, i provide one and other enhancements. "driveimage xml" doesnt come with any recovery, restore solution whereas Drive Snap does which makes it very simple and saves alot of tedious configuring. Drive Snap recovery solution takes only 30 seconds to burn to CD,DVD and its automated. You can rely on Drive Snap automatic recovery so it becomes smooth and convenient and takes out the hard work. i give convenience and the support at a very low price and you get all updates free.

A certain freeware version backed up to multiple files which i soon after replace with newer version to backup to one file. If you found a bug restoring a data partition from Vista include more details. Thanks.

I have completed the Drive Snap BartPE plugin which is available with the full version. It works great. It now possible to automatically restore from BartPe any Drive Snapshot system image you select from Drive Snap in Windows :). So it now possible to restore from either DOS or from Windows environment.

I created a demo to explain.

    Demo updates

If you mean the 6 different files as Drive Snap files. The extra files extend the capabilities. Most backup software comes with alot files that need to be installed as well. Drive Snap doesn't need to be installed. It can be run from anywhere. The few extra files tucked away are essential for creating a recovery solution quickly that can be burnt to disk which is a plus.

or if you mean the 6 different files are created for one image backup file then the last already updated Drive Snap will fix that from a few weeks ago. The last free version makes 1 image file not multiple. The full version gives the options to make the size of image you want.

I have done some more testing with Drive Snap Free, full version and Vista partititions and i still find restoring primary data partitions in Vista works fine. The CD recovery can be used to restore a Vista system image.

Use Drive Snap 1.1 that will create the recovery CD for you :thumb: you keep any backup image you made on a external drive along with Drive Snap and DS. If all the entire internal hard drives blow up, you can rely on this recovery to find and automatically restore the backup image on the external drive to a system drive new or repaired. Keeping Drive Snap and DS on an external drive is just as safe as keeping them on a conventional recovery CD as they still off the internal drives. Come to think of it my last DVD-ROM still kept the DVD's spinning fast on ejecting which did them no good.

Drive snap splits its images into 1.5 gb files bcos some users have fat32 partition that does not support files larger than 4gb.

I avoid FAT32 as much as possible as it is a less efficient filing system and recommend NTFS for a number of reasons. http://www.ntfs.com/ntfs_vs_fat.htm

    @mantra

in a word yes you can. you dont have to learn the command line options and you have choice to restore from DOS or BartPE at moment.

Someone recently asked me why Drive Snap doesn't detect the default Drive Snapshot location. c:\program files\snapshot\ to run it from there.

I make it detect that location also but in the nature of backup and restore if C: goes down for any reason c:\program files\snapshot\ would not be available and you could come unstuck. I am encouraging you to copy snapshot.exe to a safe location such as a spare internal or external drive so it can be still accessed and run in the case of system drive failure. As Drive Snapshot and Drive Snap make good portability meaning can be run from anywhere needing no install. might as well stick together and run from a spare drive than on a system drive which is a safer option and still accessed when no Windows is available on the system drive at the time of restore.

Drive Snap is hardware locked to 1 PC but you receive 3 serials(automatically time distributed at your leisure) so you can use Drive Snap on other PC's you have and still able to continue to use Drive Snap after you upgraded the hardware for future. You getting 3 Drive Snap's. Drive Snap is not locked to 1 operating system so you can continue to use on others. The price is better for you further as it converts to approximately $11.75 at these current times.

Restores a Windows 7 partition fine.

That's impressive. I've confirmed this is true. Any other exciting stories from Drive Snap users?

It's so easy to use I'm sure we could train the proverbial monkey.
