DRAM prices to keep falling through the first half of 2011

The price of DRAM, the main memory inside personal computers, will likely keep falling throughout the first half of next year before a recovery takes hold, analysts and market researchers say.

The chips, which are important to the overall speed of a computer, have been pricey over the past year because of a PC industry recovery. But in recent months, shaky consumer confidence has hurt PC sales and sent chip prices down. Increased production by DRAM makers has further hurt chip prices, and more factory capacity is coming on line that will keep DRAM prices on the decline.

I beat the price increase by about two months.
I bought 2X1 GB of PC2-4200 for $24.99 delivered (07/2009).
Less than a year later, the price had more than doubled.

Just as so many other computer component and peripheral prices have fallen, it would be nice to see DRAM prices fall back to mid-2009 levels.

My 2GB of ram was EVEN cheaper ( 2008 ) 2GB OCZ 6400 for around 28$ D

In 2008 ram was so cheap that it was the best "upgrade" options

One thing optical drives and low-end memory modules have in common is that both are dirt cheap. You usually won't, for example, have to downgrade your videocard or processor of choice to accommodate an optical drive or memory kit, not unless you're shopping something fancy like a Blu-ray burner or overclocking RAM. Things are about to get better for budget builders as memory makers look to slash the price of 2GB DDR3 modules to levels so low they might as well give them away.

Consumers continue to benefit from an oversupply of DRAM memory chips and prices so low that chip makers are struggling just to stay afloat, let alone flip a profit. The DRAM market has struggled for several years now, and at some point, you have to believe prices will go back up. We're not at that point yet, and in fact prices for DDR3 memory are at an all-time low.
