I got a tremendous deal on multi-year licenses for three computers. I've added coverage to two of my computers, and so far am very impressed. Here are a few elements from the GUI.

I bought 3 years for 2 computers. I bought amazon.in as a global key. A nice program that does not strain the system

MS Defender is putting pressure on paid AVs. It is a good thing, paid licenses should not be more than 5-10 dollars a year, most companies made hundred of millions out of FUD, it is time to change the current malware paradigm.

Of course Micro$oft makes it so Defender doesn't work on Win7 -- yet another ploy in their efforts toward forced obsolescence. (I love my new Mac but my granddaughter has her eyes on it so I'm still running Win7 -- just in case.)

There is Microsoft Security Essential's which is MS Defender's predecessor. It is even offered as an optional update in Windows Update on Windows 7 systems, if you don't already have an antivirus installed. The following is an old article, but Microsoft said a year ago, that it would continue to receive signature updates after support for Windows 7 ended.

A quick Google search revealed that this is the case, and it is still receiving updates over a year later.

I manually update MSE 4 times a day, and yes, new definitions, plus engine version updates continue.

Defender is a Lambo. MSE is a motorbike. In any event, I wouldn't use Defender even if it were available on Win7 -- much too heavy for my aging laptop.

As for Dr. Web, the price is nice BUT is it truly a "bargain" or is that low price correlated to the fact that Dr. Web's effectiveness (or lack thereof) is largely an untested mystery.

Correct, lately Dr. Web has not been participating in testing. What I can tell so far from my two computers that have Dr. Web, the coverage seems effective, although on my Dell computer it detected the Dell Support Assistant program as malware (although this gets detected a lot by many AV programs because it acts like a trojan). The only downside is that the full scan takes quite a long time.

Has the HIPS been improved? Last time I checked you couldn't even made rules in Dr Web Katana, which is pretty weird.
