Say you live in Asheville, North Carolina (like I do), and you get a hankering for some of the city’s beloved BBQ. You might start with a Google search, which provides plenty of options. Clicking on a specific BBQ joint brings up a box with handy information such as a star rating, the address, business hours, and phone number.
These restaurant listings, which appear in search and Maps, also often include an item called “Order,” with links to big-name delivery services such as DoorDash and Grubhub.

What you probably won’t see are local services like Delivery Now or Takeout Central—companies that were delivering meals a decade or more before the national giants were a twinkle in a founder’s eye.

Being left off these listings has been devastating, says Wes Garrison, CEO of Takeout Central, which began in 1996 in Chapel Hill and now delivers food in nine communities in North Carolina (including Asheville).
And their complaints go beyond the order links. They have also been frustrated trying to buy ads in Google restaurant listings, which feature link text like, “Order Now · grubhub.com.”
The program has been in closed beta for years.

“It’s just reserved exclusively for companies with big buckets of money from investors,” says Andrew Simmons, CEO of OrangeCrate, a San Diego-based company, founded in 2015, that delivers meals in 39 cities around the US.

THE LOCAL DELIVERY CRASH
Whatever the cause, it’s clear that local delivery companies have seen a dramatic turn of fortune within about the past five years.

In Q1, for instance, DoorDash posted a $110 million loss, while Grubhub lost $75.5 million. With so much money to spend, the national players can do things like charge restaurants lower commissions, or even zero commission. They can offer more-generous discounts to customers. And they can spend a lot more on advertising to recruit drivers and attract customers.

The two lawsuits accuse the services of a panoply of misconduct, including falsely advertising delivery services for restaurants without their consent, charging misleading fees to customers, and hiding the costs that they added to a meal.

“It is deeply concerning and unfortunate that these companies broke the law during these incredibly difficult times, using unfair and deceptive tactics to take advantage of restaurants and consumers who were struggling to stay afloat,” said Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who filed the complaints alongside Acting Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP) Commissioner Kenneth Meyer, and corporation counsel Celia Meza.

Grubhub denied the accusations.

“We are deeply disappointed by Mayor Lightfoot’s decision to file this baseless lawsuit. Every single allegation is categorically wrong and we will aggressively defend our business practices. We look forward to responding in court and are confident we will prevail,” a spokesperson told The Verge.
This is the second recent government lawsuit against Grubhub. In July, Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey sued it for allegedly exceeding a local 15 percent cap on fees to restaurants — a charge that is also present in the Chicago complaint.

DoorDash is similarly accused of getting around Chicago’s 15 percent cap with a $1.50 “Chicago Fee” that “misleadingly conveyed to consumers that the city was imposing this fee and receiving the money.”

DoorDash’s lawsuit also includes a shot against the company’s tipping policy — which solicited “tips” to pay drivers’ existing wages rather than actually passing them on as a bonus.

Food delivery platform DoorDash said Monday it’s expanding its alcohol delivery service to 20 new states and the District of Columbia, Canada, and Australia, which it says will reach 100 million adults worldwide.

“Customers in select markets, where legally permissible, can toggle to the Alcohol tab of the DoorDash app to browse and safely order from a wide selection of drinks from restaurants, grocery stores, local retailers, and convenience stores,” the company said in a press release.
DoorDash cited a 2020 study from the National Restaurant Association that found 56 percent of customers over 21 would order alcoholic beverages if offered as part of food delivery from a restaurant.

The feature is only available to customers 21 and older and requires ID verification: once at checkout, and again by the delivery driver at the door. DoorDash says it will blur out identifying information on users’ IDs except for the photo and date of birth, according to its customer support page.

I fully support these kind of lawsuits, the same thing is happening in Europe. It's a disgrace that workers don't have that many rights and that restaurants need to pay so much to these platforms. One solution to this problem is to redirect as many people as possible directly to their websites, but it's easier said than done of course.

A Verge feature earlier this month detailed the intense conditions faced by delivery drivers who serve apps like Grubhub and Uber Eats. Wage theft is common, as is physical assault, and pay can fluctuate wildly. Because of the gig work model, there is little security against on-the-job injuries or earnings shortfalls.
The measures passed today don’t address every danger faced by those workers, but they establish many long-sought protections.

The bills are the result of sustained organizing by Los Deliveristas Unidos, a group organizing delivery workers as part of the Worker’s Justice Project.

Users on the delivery side of the platform across the U.S. will get access to SafeDash by the end of the year.

The company has partnered with ADT to launch two new features within the toolkit. The “safety reassurance call” feature lets users connect with an ADT agent through the Dasher app in instances where they may feel unsafe. The ADT agent will remain on the phone until the individual feels safe.

DoorDash is also rolling out an “emergency assistance button” that allows users to seek help if needed. Once a delivery person clicks the button, an ADT agent will contact 911 and discreetly stay in contact with the user via text messages. The agent will then pass along critical information, such as the person’s location, to 911 operators.

DoorDash announced Tuesday it’s acquiring Wolt, a food delivery platform that’s expanded into groceries and retail, in an all-stock transaction valued at $8.1 billion.

The move is an effort to accelerate the company’s international growth. Shares of DoorDash popped more than 24% in after-hours trading following an initial dip.
Wolt has about 4,000 employees and operates in 23 countries, the company said in a release. In January, Wolt said it surpassed 10 million users.

On Thursday, the company announced that it’s adding on-demand deliveries from Dollar General. Starting today, you can order household items, including snacks and cleaning supplies, from more than 9,000 Dollar General locations across the US. DoorDash claims it will deliver most orders in under an hour. Additionally, it won’t employ time slots and there’s no minimum you need to spend to get something delivered to you.

Compared to a CVS or Walgreens, Dollar General is more of an unusual partner for DoorDash.
The chain has built its reputation on affordable prices. Adding a delivery fee to a purchase from one of its stores feels counterintuitive.

In that way, it’s hard to see the delivery option appealing to either frequent Dollar General or DoorDash customers, but at least it’s an option for those who want it.

And GrubHub is owned by Just Eat Takeaway, which is a British and Dutch company. But it's stock price has cratered from €100 to €15, I'm so glad that I never invested in them. It all started to go wrong when they bought GrubHub, so according to rumors they want to get rid of it. Another example of how takeovers can sometimes be disastrous for a company's stockprice.

You might not have to pick up your local Facebook Marketplace purchases in the near future. Meta has confirmed to The Wall Street Journal that DoorDash is now handling Facebook Marketplace deliveries as part of an "early" partnership. Couriers will deliver orders that are small enough to fit in a car trunk and come from sellers up to 15 miles away, The Journal's sources said, and should complete their dropoffs within 48 hours.

The feature is currently free to reel in customers, one tipster said. It's not clear how Facebook and DoorDash would charge customers later on. The companies have been testing the offering in multiple US cities in recent months.

DoorDash is calling off its partnership with Walmart, which had the service delivering groceries and other goods from the retail chain to customers for over four years, according to a report from Insider. A source close to the situation told Insider that DoorDash notified Walmart about its decision earlier this month, citing that the partnership “was no longer mutually beneficial” and that it wants to “focus on its long-term customer relationships.”

DoorDash reportedly gave Walmart a 30-day notice, which means the partnership will officially end in September. The two companies first teamed up in 2018 when Walmart started testing having groceries ordered through its site delivered by DoorDash. It went live in Atlanta, Georgia to start, but has since expanded to several other states.

“We have agreed to part ways with DoorDash,” Walmart spokesperson Leigh Stidham said in an emailed statement to The Verge.
“We’d like to thank DoorDash for their partnership and support of our customers the past several years.”

Walmart has been busy building out its own delivery service platform, Spark, which hands off grocery deliveries to its own database of gig workers, similar to the way Lyft and Uber operate. The company’s product features include shoppable weekly ads, rewards programs integrations, third-party fulfillment logistics integrations, payment processing and more. Rosie, which is based in Ithaca, New York, has raised $11.9 million to date.

Instacart says the acquisition will allow it to introduce new e-commerce solutions for local and independent retailers that complement its Instacart Platform e-commerce offerings, which give retailers access to the solutions behind Instacart’s consumer marketplace to help them enhance customer experience and help their businesses grow.

Last week, Instacart announced that it’s acquiring Eversight, an AI-powered pricing and promotions platform for consumer packaged goods (CPG) brands and retailers, for an undisclosed amount.

Last October, Instacart acquired Caper AI, a startup that builds smart cart and cashier-less checkout technology that uses computer vision and other techniques to detect items and ring them up for shoppers, for around $350 million, in a combination of cash and shares. The company’s acquisition of Caper AI followed just weeks after Instacart acquired FoodStorm to help stores take and manage catering-style larger orders of ready-made food. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

DoorDash has expanded its safety toolkit, rolling out new features that will automatically check in with delivery workers and provide easier ways to report incidents that could impact the safety of both its customers and employees.

Allowing couriers to report and block any customers that may endanger them without facing a penalty is a step forward, but there is only so much that technology can do to improve the safety of DoorDash delivery workers, especially regarding incidents that occur outside of courier-customer interactions.

Gopuff launches scheduled deliveries, gifting and in-store pickup

Rapid grocery deliver startups like Getir, Gopuff and Gorillas, once heralded as the next big thing in on-demand ordering, are running up against logistical challenges that might very well be insurmountable. Even faced with competition and sky-high operating costs, though, they’re taking what steps they can to stick around. Case in point, Gopuff today launched features aimed at eliminating some of the platform’s biggest pain points, like the inability to schedule orders ahead or pick up orders from nearby stockrooms.

Starting today, Gopuff customers can place an order when the Gopuff marketplace closes — the exact hours depend on the market — to have Gopuff deliver the order as soon as it reopens. (Needless to say, this doesn’t apply to locations where Gopuff delivers 24/7.) Alternatively, customers can schedule an order in advance for a specific date and time, similar to most major food delivery apps, or arrange for an order to be picked up where Gopuff offers retail and in-store shopping.

The in-store shopping experience remains rather limited.

Gopuff didn’t initially respond to TechCrunch’s question about whether gift recipients’ information are retained for marketing or other purposes. Gopuff, like many app-based products and services, collects a broad swath of personal information that it reserves the right to use for ad targeting and promoting its subscription services, as well as sharing with third parties including business partners and “affiliates and subsidiaries.”

In a follow-up email, a Gopuff spokesperson clarified that gift recipient info isn’t retained for use in these ways.
The new features are only available via the latest Gopuff app (version 8.1.0), the company notes, which began rolling out nationwide this morning.

Grubhub must pay DC $3.5 million over claims it charged customers hidden fees

Grubhub has been ordered to pay $3.5 million to settle a lawsuit from the District of Columbia that claims the company misled customers by tacking on hidden fees to their orders. According to a press release, Grubhub must pay $800,000 to DC as a civil penalty, while the remaining $2.7 million “will be paid back to affected customers.”

In March, DC Attorney General Karl Racine filed a lawsuit against Grubhub, accusing it of falsely promising “free” online orders to customers, as well as “unlimited free delivery” for those who subscribe to Grubhub Plus. The lawsuit alleges this practice is “deceptive” since Grubhub still takes a service fee for non-pickup orders made by Grubhub Plus customers, and charges both delivery and service fees for standard orders as well.

“Settling this lawsuit is in the best interest of our business and the matter is now resolved,” Grubhub spokesperson Liza Dee says in a statement to The Verge. “Grubhub is committed to supporting all restaurants and diners, and is taking a number of steps to ensure price transparency.”
