Every once in awhile someone will send me a .docx file but I can't read it. I have Microsoft works, any suggestions for a free reader?

AbiWord can open .docx files. Their latest Windows version is 2.8.6.

There's also a Portable version, courtesy of PortableApps.com.

Libre Office is my suggestion too! Libre Office is a large installation but it's what I'm moving to from Office. I've done some very basic tests and have decided that for me, with the exception of macros in Excel, Libre can handle whatever I will throw at it. It's free and highly, actively supported.

For several years, I've used DocX Viewer for that, and for opening newer versions of .doc files people send me.

Thanks to all for their suggestions which I've taken under advisement. Thankfully I don't have to deal with this right away as this is a very busy time for me.

Wordpad on Win7 will open .docx files (but not .doc I think)
