The MS app works by detecting the files to be removed working in Administrator mode, and the actual deletion is done at shutdown or reboot.

I wouldn´t trust CCleaner doing this kind of things.

I tried the new Disk Cleanup yesterday and it worked well, deleted 1+GB (after a reboot).

But I have had problems with the similar app in Windows 8.

Interesting. Something similar exists in Win8.1. After upgrading Win8 to Win8.1 and running Disk Clean-up, the WinSxS folder is 3 to 4 GB smaller.

There may be some issues with with the Microsoft validation site. If I find out more, I will post.

I did not need to install the Disk Cleanup Wizard Tool as it must have been installed yesterday (Tuesday) through Microsoft updates. Just by following the instructions in the link in the 1st post by ronjor it removed 4.4 GB from my PC, Win 7 SP1. Very important to reboot after running it.

@ Robin A., thanks for the info (CCleaner about).

@ The Red Moon, I had same annoyance like you. Figured out it however. My suggestion:

► Your default browser is IE? If not you need to have it as default and doing validation with it (IE x32; x64 can't be default browser).

    Info from someone else:

    Thanks for posting, did what you said and recovered 3.38GB x 2 FD snapshots on C = 6.76GB total on a 120GB SSD (111.79GB) = 6% = significant!

    and back to FF :)

I'm kind of confused, is this an update to the 'standard' Disk Cleanup utility that's accessible when clicking on C-Drive Properties, or is it a separate utility? If the latter, how does one run it?

It seems that the download version fo the validation tool is the one that produces the "unsupported" message. Internet Explorer has to be used in order to install the ActiveX version of the validation tool. It's not necessary for IE 10 to be the default browser, however it is necessary to click to display all content not just secure content otherwise the validation ActiveX control won't install.
